The two casts you see, one for the Broken leg and the other is to raise the level or height of the other so there will not be resulting problems with other joints due to to un-natural height differences. Horses can and do die if they can not put weight on all fours. It is a testament to the people at Penn and to Barbaro himself that he lives! As heartbreaking as it is, it is a Miracle he is still here!

I dont think that the cast on the left leg is for raising the level. He has a special shoe on that is absorbing any extra weight he may be putting on that leg to compensate for what he is taking off of his injured leg. The wrappings up top is to support his ligaments and tendons from any undue stress from any extra weight as well. It is not really a cast though, since Micheal Matz has been there to change it a few times. It seems to be working, and hopefully continues to work.
