Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Then world behind and home ahead
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
|
|
|
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
|
|
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Tadaima. Or not, since this isn't home and I won't actually be home for about six weeks. Anyway I'm back safely. Ugh... back to real life... hope you're not too much of a zombie today hon.

Hair: I completely understand. Don't worry, I know you'd be there if you could. We'll miss you! Actually I say that but I'm not too sure I'll notice anyone being there.

Verizon Broadband vs. Comcast.
Discuss...
I think the main question being do I have to have an individual service plan for ~each~ computer?

Last night Steve was sitting at our computer trying to get his U of Phoenix stuff set up...so he can access it from home. He'd click a link...then a few seconds later, he'd click it again and finally he said in frustration "WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS COMPUTER???" I calmly replied "It's called "dial-up" my dear."

I'm trying to figure out if the whole concept would work of ditching the cable modem and going completely wireless. But it's not ecnomically feasible if I have to pay the $59.00 a month for BOTH the PC and the laptop.

I know what you mean! OB was just driving me nuts whimpering about the dial-up so we went DSL. I've kept the dial-up account since it's only $2 with our webTV. I had to get into msn today to get some old registration info and I thought I would fall asleep before the page loaded. LSA

Can you get a wireless router that has multiple wireless ports? I don't know...

Me neither. That's why I thought I'd ask. I can't tell from the Verizon website if I'd need two accounts. We'd want mobility with the laptop also.

Verizon Broadband vs. Comcast. Comcast cable is faster downstream, slower upstream, than DSL. My cable is about 7Mbps down, 128K to 256K up. DSL is usually on the order of 512K, but it is also usually symmetric, meaning that it is the same up and downstream. The farther you get from the phone switches (the CO), the slower it is. Out at the beach I'm about at the limit for DSL and I get about 256K up/down out there.
Cable and DSL both have connectivity problems, frequent outages, and crummy service. I don't know that one is any better than the other. The DSL network model is more robust, only because Comcast's ATTBI network has been undersized and oversold from the beginning and they've never quite caught up.
For online gaming, DSL is theoretically better because of the faster upstream speed. For just web browsing and downloading stuff, Cable is the clear choice. Its an order of magnitude faster. Uploading really large files can be slower on cable though, and the network design (looping through the entire neighborhood) leaves cable still vulnerable to congestion from the neighbors.
I got cable in the city, and dsl at the beach. The cable is noticably quicker, but Ruthy's had some trouble working on it because we've had a couple of several-hour daytime outages in the last few weeks. The reason is still unknown to comcast.
I'm guessing that Cable is the better choice for you. Lightning speed downstream, and you probably don't push a lot of data upstream. By "a lot" I mean gaming with constant graphics refreshes, or multi-megabyte uploads to other sites.

Oh, and no, you don't have to have a separate account for each computer. You get one Cable/DSL connection and then connect a switch/router/firewall/wifi box behind it and connect everybody to that.
