World Cup Scores Only Small Audience

World Cup Scores Only Small Audience
Only 6% Following Tournament Very Closely

Despite a high level of media coverage for the World Cup soccer tournament, three-fourths of Americans (78%) are not following the action very closely if at all. A Rasmussen Reports survey of 1,000 adults found that just 6% are following the tournament very closely.

Nine percent (9%) of men are paying close attention along with 3% of women.

The Super Bowl remains the biggest sport championship in terms of fan appeal. Thirty-five percent (35%) of Americans say it’s their favorite championship to watch. The World Series is the only other championship to reach double digits—12% of adults say it’s their favorite.

One-fourth of all Americans (25%) say they don’t want any sports championships.

Despite the general lack of interest in the World Cup by the US audience, the soccer tournament is more popular than the NBA basketball championship and the NHL’s Stanley Cup hockey title. Both of those events were being held at the same time as the World Cup.

Fourteen percent (14%) of Americans say they played soccer in an organized league at some point in their life.

Fifty-two percent (52%) of Americans believe there is a professional soccer league in the United States (and they’re right).

The survey was conducted before the U.S. soccer team was eliminated. However, few were surprised by the lack of success--just 5% of the nation’s adults thought it was very likely the U.S. team would win the tournament.

The national telephone survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted by Rasmussen Reports June 19-20, 2006. The margin of sampling error for the survey is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.

Here's the differece between the USA and most of the world in sports--in most of the world, soccer is pretty much it when it comes to organized sports for a whole country. This isn't like the USA, where these major sports--American football, baseball and basketball, and to a lesser extent hockey--compete for the best athletes and fan support.

"POLL: Only 6% of Americans are closely following the World Cup..."

And only 2% of those spoke English

Here's the difference, Lokibob. In NASCAR, all the teams are on the same "field" at the same time. They move from track to track, but Stewart, Biffle, Gordon, Martin, Earnhart Jr etc are ALL at the same race. It's as if you had all 32 football teams playing in the same stadium on the same day. Therefore, imo, to accurately compare NASCAR attendance to NFL attendance on a giving Sunday, you should combine the attendance of all the NFL games together and compare that to whatever Nextel Race is being held.

Actually, I am surprised - that the number is that high!

Polling must have been done in urban metrosexual areas.

Exactly it. Personally I spend my weekends switching channels between baseball and NASCAR.

"Football kills Nascar. Have a Nascar race in every city on the same day where there is a NFL football game and Nascar will get killed on attendance."

150,000 on Sunday, 100,000 on Saturday (Bousch racing), 50,000 weeklong pit passes, and 26 weeks of racing are some pretty impressive numbers.

I watch football, of course, but when you see a mile long straightaway, with nothing but fans 50 deep, you have to be impressed.

Soccer is a wimp sport and that is why it is so popular in Europe and some of the socialist countries in Latin America. I tried watching some of the WC and I turned off after seeing two players get bumped and then they put them on a stretcher later to return a minute later. What a bunch of drama kings! No wonder liberals love the sport.

> No wonder, the most boring game in the U.S. has to be soccer.

Most Americans would rather watch paint dry. I'll bet the 6 per cent in this country following the World Cup closely are 3% naturalized Americans and 3% illegals :-)

Martinsville and Pocono (I think) are well under 100k. I know Martinsville is around 70k.

...is that 6% of Americans, or 6% of people in America?

Good question. I suspect it is the latter.

Was cubicle bound yesterday but caught the first part of the Brazil game. 3-0 even before the break. Whew. Unfortunately that 6% number is probably about right.

"Crock. NASCAR beats them all. And the championship is on the line every week with the points leader changing.

Scoocr, football, NBA would drool to ge"

Smart man not to mention MLB.

Major league Baseball sells 80 million tickets a year no one anywhere on the planet is ever going to come close to that. Not even Nascar.

When Americans get really interested in Soccer we will win the world cup everytime and the rest of the world will find something else to be interested in.

The 6% that watches closely must be illegals. Watching some of these matches, e.g., Ukraine-Switzerland and any US match, is torture and should not be suffered, even at Guantanamo.

Soccer is just never going to be as big in the US as baseball, football, basketball or hockey.

Very true. Not with the competition from the traditional American sports. I do watch soccer, but it's down on the list after College Football, NFL, NHL, MLB. You can keep the NBA.

American football is superior in every way to soccer or hockey.. Must be the "globalists" trying to force world opinion down our throats.. Could be those that do watch world cup events only do it cause its ON TV..
