Rowling: Two 'Potter' Characters Will Die

LONDON - Author J.K. Rowling said two characters will die in the last installment of her boy wizard series, and she hinted Harry Potter might not survive either.

"I have never been tempted to kill him off before the final because I've always planned seven books, and I want to finish on seven books," Rowling said on Monday's "Richard and Judy" television show.

"I can completely understand, however, the mentality of an author who thinks, `Well, I'm gonna kill them off because that means there can be no non-author written sequels. So it will end with me, and after I'm dead and gone they won't be able to bring back the character'."

Rowling declined to commit herself about Harry, saying she doesn't want to receive hate mail.

"The last book is not finished. But I'm well into it now. I wrote the final chapter in something like 1990, so I've known exactly how the series is going to end," she said.

Rowling said people are sometimes shocked to hear that she wrote the end of book seven before she had a publisher for the first book in the series.

"The final chapter is hidden away, although it's now changed very slightly. One character got a reprieve. But I have to say two die that I didn't intend to die," she said. "A price has to be paid. We are dealing with pure evil here. They don't target extras do they? They go for the main characters. Well, I do."

Rowling is the richest woman in Britain _ wealthier than even the queen _ with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine last year at more than $1 billion.

Whatever she writes next, Rowling is sure of one thing: It won't be as successful as Harry Potter.

"I don't think I'm ever going to have anything like Harry again. You just get one like Harry."

My guess: Harry and Ron go tango uniform and future books feature Hermione.

Tolkein showed the pain and loss in other ways - and that got lost in translation to the movie. Nothing like a killin' to make sure the audience doesn't miss the point.

I like your ideas, Josh! It would be good to see Neville getting revenge for his parents' torture, or even getting to kill LV as the source of all his tragedy.

I don't know if I think Wormtail is enough of a "major" character to be one of the deaths Rowling was discussing. It should be someone closer to Harry and on whom he relies for some degree of protection. Unfortunately, that probably means Hagrid. . .

I was thinking Ron and Hermione until i saw the clip of Rowling. Now I think it will be Harry so that no other author can continue the series. maybe Harry and Hermione dying together like James and Lilly. Rowling has said Herminoe represents a blend of Rowling and her sister so that would be the way to drive the nails in the coffin of the series.

Exactly. I enjoyed Tokien's works long before the movies, which did an okay job. Killing all of your main characters is the lazy way out.

Yes, but in her defense she is a basically a first time novelist whose first book was so successful it has taken all her energy.


Tolkien was a scholar both of language and historic British literary themes - you'd expect a bit more sophistication.

As she states in the above article, she had the last chapter of book seven written in 1990. Sorcerer's Stone came out in 1998. She'd been planning this series for years.

My nephew believes that Ron is a Seer from clues given through the books. It would be unusual for Ron to be caught unaware; but he is has a pure heart and courage in the face of fear, so he may deliberately put himself in a path the save Harry or his love Hermione.

It would be unusual for Ron and Hermione not to end up together in the end.

I'm afraid for Mrs. Weasley and Harry.

Rowling is right. The rain falls on the just and the unjust. And the sacrificial savior scene may have motivated her writing of the last scene when she first put pen to paper.

Those of us doing troop support care packages pray a lot for those in harm's way. None of the ones that fall are extras to their families. Each is a main character whose death is keenly felt.

I didn't know that about Rowling - very interested Rowling and Tolkein both going to Exeter.

Rowling's changed the last chapter though - saving the person who was to be killed and killing two others instead.

I know, the Weasleys are great people, and Fred and George are hysterical. I am hoping in the next movie, they will leave in their storyline, the pranks would be great on the big screen!!

I would not be the slightest bit surprised if one of their pranks ends up killing Voldamort.
