In two more days, only 8 teams will remain in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
TODAY'S GAMES: Italy-Australia (11:00AM EST) followed by Swiss-Ukraine (3:00 PM EST).

Luca Tonni just got introduced to Aussie football. What a tackle by the Aussies! UK announcers calling it a "stinger"!
Do you guys think that Italy will indict players (to go along with whoever's under indictment so far) after their World Cup is finished?
I don't mind having two yellow cards result in removal from the game. It is like picking up your sixth foul in basketball. I think you need to have some sort of limit on the number of yellows you can receive in game so you don't have people committing foul after foul. I just don't like the carryover rule for yellows or reds with the one exception I mentioned.
Oh I agree. Guess I wasn't that clear in what I was saying.
The red and yellow system is fine. It's the suspensions for following games that I think are unwarranted, especially as referees are giving yellow cards for innocuous fouls.
Imagine how ridiculous the NBA would be if six fouls in TWO games resulted in a suspension!
Heh..they'd have to employ full-time suspension monitors for each team just to keep track.
I don't know what the ramifications may be in the courts, but, according to reports here, Juventus (the biggest team there) are certain to be relegated as punishment for their part in match-fixing. If that's the case, its a fair bet individual prosecutions may follow.
Incidentally, the last time Italy had a scandal of this size was in 1982. They also won the world cup that year. Omen?
HMM. Could be, I suppose. I figured that the player indictments have to come eventually. Can't have match-fixing without player complicity.

From the reports that Ive seen its perfectly possible. Juventus were trying to ensure they won, rather than fix scores for some dubious betting ring. The players are trying to win anyway so they just need to get at the referees.
There certainly could be player complicity, but most of the focus seems to be on others involved in the sport.
There were prosecutions in '82. Paolo Rossi was the most high-profile. He was found not guilty. I suppose its hard to jail a guy who scores 3 vs Brazil. If a club the size of Juve is certain to be relegated (possibly 2 divisions), the evidence must be overwhelming.
Having said that, if these guys lose to the Aussies, jail is probably the safest place for them.
Actually, the analogy would be for technical or flagrant fouls, not common fouls. NBA players can already get suspended for flagrant fouls, and it would be interesting to see what would happen if a one-game suspension followed after getting too many technicals over the course of a set number of games...
Cahill - Yellow Card
Materazi - RED CARD (for tackle)
Italy red card, down 1
Materazzi sent of..
Apparently for a sideburn violation,
51' RED CARD 23 Materazzi Marco (ITA)
Good good. I have a small bet on a draw so neutering the Italians is a good idea!
Silly tackle but red? He's not the last man and it wasn't especially dangerous.
He's ex-Everton though so I know some Liverpool fans who'll be smiling.
'That's only because the Portuguese eliminated the Dutch."
Very true!
LOL!
That makes it even. The Italians are still dangerous with 10.
