Yellowstone Tourist Dies in 500-Foot Fall

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) - A woman lost her footing after stepping over a retaining wall to take a photograph and went over a cliff, falling 500 feet to her death in a canyon, park officials said.
The 52-year-old woman was visiting the park with her husband and two children.
Her husband flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911 after the Saturday morning accident at an overlook along the Yellowstone River, park officials said.
A ranger rappelled down the canyon wall to reach the woman, but she was dead at the scene.
In Michigan, The Grand Rapids Press on Sunday identified the woman as Deb Chamberlin, 52, of Rockford, vice president of the school board in the west Michigan community.
"It's hard for me to articulate right now because I'm still in shock," said Rockford Superintendent Mike Shibler, who said he spoke to Chamberlin's husband, Gary.
It was the second fatal accident in Yellowstone this year. In February, a woman was killed in a snowmobile accident.

Ya know most people spend most of their life in urban settings which have been de-naturized. Their only exposure is watching a tv show with some expert making it look easy. Then when people get out in the real world they make mistakes. Doesn't mean they are stupid just means they are out of their element.
Everyone has a "it can't happen to me" attitude to some extent. The people who pay attention to the warnings are generally those with enough experience to know it can happen to them.
"...F'ing hypocrites." Aren't you being somewhat extreme in your assessment?
Sometimes us city folks forget how really dangerous the natural world is. Especially since we as a culture tend to glorify it.
And to make it worse, when you're focusing on your photography, sometimes, your brain isn't exactly paying attention to your surroundings.
Auntie Mame lost a husband that way.
How on Earth could you get a better picture going beyond that fence?
Ouch. Of course, there's nothing to stop anyone from getting into the horseshoe falls, either, American or Canadian side. The Canadian side is especially dangerous as its just a slippery grassy bank between the sidewalk and the river just 50 ft behind the falls.

It's still awful for her family, though. We've all done stupid things and survived them, or we wouldn't be posting now. It's a reminder that (as a theological concept) the world is against us. Gravity bites, and so do bears; physics kills.
