Lawyer Alex Charns unleashed a second salvo this week in what he calls his "poster war," demanding a public police apology for a March placard that sought help in solving the Duke University lacrosse rape case.
Charns, representing one of the unindicted players, also reiterated an earlier request that the Durham Police Department launch an internal investigation into the situation.
Police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said the department had no immediate comment.
According to Charns, the poster libeled 46 lacrosse players before the district attorney acknowledged he had sufficient evidence to prosecute only three for the alleged rape of an exotic dancer during an off-campus party at 610 N. Buchanan Blvd. in mid-March.
The poster said the accuser "was sodomized, raped, assaulted and robbed. This horrific crime sent shock waves throughout our community."

Ping.
Any new information on what Sean Hannity has been hinting at -- something about Nifong having made obscene and threatening gestures?
The prosecution better watch it because they are handing the defense the perfect justification for tainting the jury pool and requesting a change of venue. If that happens, this DA is screwed.
>>In an e-mail to Police Chief Steve Chalmers and other city officials this week, Charns said a correction and apology should be "disseminated to every person, neighborhood association and media entity that received the original libelous communication on official city of Durham Police Department letterhead." <<
Libelous communication? Sounds like a civil action against the police departmant is coming.
Durham PD's motto: "To slander and cower." It's what we do.
pinging the pingers. This is good news.
Howlin, it's great to see you back.
Sorry Peach, didn't see you had already alerted Perdogg.
I take it that Hannity has been hinting about more bad Nifong behavior? Can you elaborate any?
Good grief, no kidding? Well, I hope he loses his job over this.
And I hope a lot of university kids learn an important lesson from this horrid story--especially the one about lying down with dogs (or srippers) and fleas and such. Maybe they thought hiring some hootchy-kootchy girls and getting drunk was a great idea at the time, but surely hindsight suggests otherwise by now.
Just a helpful suggestion. Durham should put itself up for sale to raise money so they can pay off the judgement against them when it comes. Now, now to be vindictive or anything, but I hope the judgement against Durham is about, oh, 50 jillion dollars.
I told you all that poster was going to come back and bite them on the butt!
Remember that the police went door to door with a petition for people to sign that said the exact same thing.
I smell litigation!
And they deserve it.
There's a few posters here that would like to kick those butts!
I'm going to have an OPEN HOUSE for all of you all and we'll charter a bus to the defamation trial. What a way to spend the summer, eh?
I'm still waiting to find out where the Chief of Police is. What the heck is going on? Doesn't the press even ask simple questions any more?
Count me in.
Our "local press" (read Kevin Miller) is too busy getting his fat mug on TV to actually DO any work on this case.
You got it!! Let the can of whoop-you-know -what be opened. LOL!
Don't you wonder what the reaction in the black community is going to be when they announce the charges were false?
Will anybody EVER believe them again when they jump in front of a microphone.
Sign me up! I'll cook. Someone else can do dishes.
