You're right though.

If you scratch that thing you're gonna have a bump, and it'll bleed and become infected, and next thing you know, off comes the arm.

And all because you couldn't stop from scratching it. Well, I hope you're happy now, Ms. had-to-scratch-it-because-it-itched-really-really-bad. You'll never make the major leagues now! All that practice. Down the drain! All those nights of going to bed hunger. All the camps, the overnights to the games! Gone. GONE! For a lousy mosquito bite!

Baking soda may help, as will any cortisone (ie cortaid, cortisone 10) cream or spray.
