Showing more stealth than Sandy Berger with documents or Bill Clinton sneaking out of the White House at night to see Monica ......... Ben escaped under the cover of darkness.

His new name is Toothlessberger.
Maybe a helmet isn't such a bad idea after all.

Someone (Jim Quinn) who has ridden bikes for 40 years, and I trust him, suggested on his radio show for the past days, that if Ben had had on one of those full helmets with the face protection (the thing that looks like a big bird) he could have hit that window, his head could have snapped back very quickly, and he could be a quadriplegic today. So, that's just one thing to think of.
But..... if I ever got on a motorcycle, I'd wear a helmet.

Glad to hear it. I've always been a Steelers fan. I hope this helps him grow up and start to make smarter choices. Riding a motor cycle without a helmet is a really good way to put your career in jeopardy.

YOu can pay em' a lot of money but it won't make em' smart.

That is possible, especially with the older models of full face helmets.
But the newer ones, made in the last 5 years or so, are cut high in the back with additional padding allowing full range of backward motion.
Even with the new design however, there is still a neck injury disclaimer accompanying the product.

Ben will never be the same as he was before the accident. Hopefully it will not have a measureable effect on his football career.

Helmets are good things. I saw two guys die in Italy, when a helmet would have saved either of them. One Italian was cruising about 5-7 mph on a Vespa and hit a small rock and fell into a concrete drainage duct that was about 2 feet deep. His head hit a golf ball sized rock and it dented his skull enough to kill him. Another guy was being stupid on a Harley. He missed a corner, because of loose gravel, and ran into a chain-link fence at about 40 mph. His head contacted one of the poles, which was small enough to flex and get pushed out of the ground and it caused him brain damage, but little else (rest of body scraped but nothing else broken). Both died and it seems pretty obvious that both would be alive if they had worn helmets.
Some folks would talk about the "what ifs" and claim a helmet would cause death or injury where not wearing one would have left the person OK, but those are the aberrations and not the rule - many more are saved from safety gear than get killed because of it.

Here's to a quick heal and looking forward to seeing him chucking the pigskin this fall.

I hope this helps him grow up and start to make smarter choices. Riding a motor cycle without a helmet is a really good way to put your career in jeopardy. I think his not wearing a helmet may have more to do with the lack of recognition ... after all, if I'm wearing a helmet (without a uniform) how will anyone know who I am? This mindset is pervasive with celebrity types in the early years, as they mature being recognized everywhere they go becomes much less appealing.

I laid down my bike last year and slid across the wet pavement. My head hit a stop sign pillar and snapped pretty violently. I had a headache, plus a broken collarbone and four cracked ribs, along with a cracked helmet. I'm not a quad. I don't have a six-inch crack in my skull. And I'm still riding. I don't like helmet laws either. BUT PLEASE: Wear your helmet. Ride responsibly. And assume that every driver on the planet is out to kill you.
