Confederate flags flown aboard the international space station and seemingly signed by a NASA astronaut showed up last week on the online auction site eBay.
The original eBay listing indicated that the 4-by-6-inch flags were brought aboard the space station by Russian cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov in 2004, and an accompanying photo showed a sample flag that seemed to bear Sharipovs signature as well as that of Leroy Chiao, his NASA colleague on the station. Yet another photo showed several of the rebel flags floating in a space station module.
The item was pulled from the auction on Monday by the seller, Alex Panchenko of USSR-Russian Air-Space Collectibles Inc. in Los Angeles and on Tuesday, Panchenko told MSNBC.com that he removed the items from sale because he had concluded the flag and the authentication documents were forgeries.
However, Robert Pearlman, editor and founder of CollectSpace, said he believes the flags are authentic.
The picture taken of the flags aboard the station says a lot, he said. It would be difficult to fake, given the style and I couldn't see the motivation to do so. The onboard-the-ISS stamp, added Pearlman, is not known to have been counterfeited anywhere."
The disappearance of the flags followed a round of criticism over the weekend from former space scientist Keith Cowing, publisher of NASA Watch, an independent Web log. He cited the Confederate flags as an example of bad judgment on the ISS.
You'd think that someone on the U.S. side of the ISS program would have expressed some concern about flying a symbol on the ISS that many Americans associate with slavery, Cowing wrote.

"The questionable behavior you're thinking of must have been his election to Congess in 1862. Prior to that his service had been very distinguished, rising from regimental commander to brigade commander to corps chief-of-staff under Rosecrans."
No. That is not the questionnable behavior being referred to. However, I do recall reading something about him being in Washington, and no one could stand him, so they sent him to the field. But no one could stand him there either, so they sent him back. And, I do not consider General Rosecrans to be the shiniest marble. In my opinion, Rosecrans was a deceitful, little brat, so anyone under his command would be equally deceitful.
Anyway, the first time I came across Garfield's name, was regarding a hanging and a drum-head court martial in June of 1863, in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Garfield had a hidden-agenda with this one. And, there was so much shuffling and erasing and fudging of documents, that I wouldn't believe Garfield had a shiny career under any circumstances.
Uh...no, I don't think so. You are not answering my question directly. You are going about it in a round about way. And it first must be determined whether I'm to be classified as being off-the-wall. Because if that is so, then this conversation has concluded. And don't go and play around with words because you know exactly what I mean. So, just answer my question and stop pulling the, you jump through several hoops, then I'll talk. Because I won't buy it...
maybe you o mighty one should read up on the yankee slaves .of course that's not pc.
You said it. Enough is enough....
Fiddle Dee Dee! (snaps open fan and fans furiously)
Once again your memory must be playing you false. Prior to the war Garfield was a teacher, college president, and state senator. He wasn't in Washington to be hated by anyone. He didn't go to Washington until his first session of Congress in 1863 and he remained there as Congressman and President until his assasination in 1881. I'm surprised that you're so down on him, especially since he was the president of the court martial that convicted Colonel Turchin.

Since Garfield was in Congress in June 1863, and not in the army, hd couldn't have had anything to do with 'a hanging and a drum-head court martial' in Murfeesboro. Unless you are referring to Colonel Turchin's trial the year before.
OK, then yes I've seen enough of your posts to come to the opinion that you have a decidedly pro-southron bias. As pronounced as that of the Kennedy boys and Tommy DiLorenzo. You will condemn any and all actions on the part of Lincoln and the Union while ignoring similar or worse actions on the part of the south. Satisfied?
And before you ask I will be the first to state that I have a bias as well towards the Union cause. But I'm honest enough to admit it.
actually, i'm NOT the liar here, as most here know.
PITY that you evidently haven't figured out who that is.

> read up on the yankee slaves
Really? So... what "yankee" states rose up in traitorous rebellion to maintain their slave holding status? Fill me in.

THIS will be my last post to you. You are so totally prone to disbelieve anything positive about the South. And further prone to deliberately putting people on the defensive for a very selfish reason.
The court martial business was reasearched, BY MYSELF, and DUH! I know he was in WASHINGTON. DUH! DUH! DUH! BUT DUH! That does not mean, DUH! that one cannot contact him by TELEGRAPH! DUH!
...And, bye...
if so, i PITY you.
otoh, if/when you figure out that you've been lied to KNOWINGLY & made a FOOL of, you may come to me off-forum & apologize to me. i will NOT ask you to do so on forum, as nobody here deserves that.

i cannot remember a single occasion, but your evasions, 1/2-truths & outright untruths are legendary on FR.

Well, hello again. Now I understand the deliberate attempts at sabotage by the propangandized folks. They will degrade, just for the sake of degrading as that is what has been taught to them as the right thing to do. Puts it all in a better light to really see what has happened due to Lincoln and his cohorts...
no skin off my nose, but it certainly reflects BADLY on YOU .
