Confederate flags on space station draw ire
MSNBC ^ | 6/13/06 | James Oberg

Confederate flags flown aboard the international space station — and seemingly signed by a NASA astronaut — showed up last week on the online auction site eBay.

The original eBay listing indicated that the 4-by-6-inch flags were brought aboard the space station by Russian cosmonaut Salizhan Sharipov in 2004, and an accompanying photo showed a sample flag that seemed to bear Sharipov’s signature as well as that of Leroy Chiao, his NASA colleague on the station. Yet another photo showed several of the rebel flags floating in a space station module.

The item was pulled from the auction on Monday by the seller, Alex Panchenko of USSR-Russian Air-Space Collectibles Inc. in Los Angeles — and on Tuesday, Panchenko told MSNBC.com that he removed the items from sale because he had concluded the flag and the authentication documents were forgeries.

However, Robert Pearlman, editor and founder of CollectSpace, said he believes the flags are authentic.

“The picture taken of the flags aboard the station says a lot,” he said. “It would be difficult to fake, given the style and I couldn't see the motivation to do so.” The “onboard-the-ISS” stamp, added Pearlman, is not known to have been counterfeited anywhere."

The disappearance of the flags followed a round of criticism over the weekend from former space scientist Keith Cowing, publisher of NASA Watch, an independent Web log. He cited the Confederate flags as an example of “bad judgment on the ISS.”

“You'd think that someone on the U.S. side of the ISS program would have expressed some concern about flying a symbol on the ISS that many Americans associate with slavery,” Cowing wrote.

certainly does. for example, "wee willie klintoon" won the POTUS job twice.

Another sterling politician in the mold of Jefferson Davis.

.it says a lot more about the DYs having an essentially UNLIMITED amount of supplies & men to throw up against southern steel.

As well as the over all ineptness of southern generals.

To string up the CSA officers as traitors? Good idea.

"Davis will not be found guilty and we shall stand there completely beaten." Conclusion of report prepared by Judge Francis Lieber for the Johnson Administration, assessing the probability of a conviction of treason against Jefferson Davis. See Foote, Vol.3.

Perhaps Jefferson Davis does not quality as an "officer." He was merely Commander-in-Chief.

If you are going to defend the confederate flag from the Democrats why is it that you feel the need to constantly defend the Democrats?

It is YOU who are in lock step with the Democrats on this issue.

Jefferson Davis was very fond of Catholics, in fact, after he was freed from his unjust incarceration, he chose to build his final home in the one area of Mississippi where Catholics called all the shots.

Given that much of Confederate high society, especially in the gulf region was of Catholic persuasion, many Catholics in the Confederacy (including my ancestors) found themselves in possession of desireable commissions.

The Confederacy commissioned an Indian general, who happened to be one of the greatest tacticians in our nations history. After the war of course, the Union repayed them by essentially forcing the Indians out of Oklahoma. The Confederacy of course had Judah Benjamin, who would later become a Senator in Louisiana. Then of course there was Father Ryan, the "poet-priest." In the Confederate cabinet there was much religious diversity, and Catholics certainly were overrepresented, when compared to their proportion of the population. Of course, in Southern cities, Catholics were treated with respect and in Northern cities, nativists mobs harrassed them, so I guess it's not unexpected.

Benjamin's senate term was before the Civil War. After the war he fled to England, afraid of being implicated in the Lincoln assassination (which he almost certainly was). He died in Paris and is buried there.

I'm becoming convinced that Watie is actually a computer program. It randomly strings together about a hundred phrases into paragraphs of different lengths, disregarding grammar and capitalization rules. It's probably some 8th grader's attempt to create something that will pass the Turing Test. In that he fails miserably.

in point of fact, over 100,000 Black men (and not a few women, btw!) volunteered to serve in the CSA army, navy & marines. by mid-1862 virtually every large unit of the CSA forces was desegregated. in the CSA all soldiers/sailors/marines were paid by rank alone, rather than by their skin color.

in the union forces, Blacks served at HALF pay, in segregated units, under the command of white officers.

of course the "oh, so PC LEFT" & the DAMNyankee apologists want to keep those UNcomfortable facts quiet.

I would certainly be interested in knowing the name of, and a citation by, any reputable historian who has linked Judah Benjamin with either J.W. Booth or his co-conspirators.

Yes, yes, yes, the Union had Indian officers and Catholic officers and Jewish officers, too. Lincoln spoke out against those who advocated anti-Catholic and anti-semitic sentiments. And you point is?

No kidding. My guess is, if stories like that existed, it was more than likely due to rampant anti-Semitism in the Northern states. In Southern cities, Jews were welcomed into high society and treated like equals, in Northern cities, they were spat upon and segregated into ghettoes, so any talk of moral high ground on the part of Northerners evaporates when you see how people of different ethnicities were treated. The first state to elect a governor of Italian descent was Mississippi. But don't tell that to Northerners, who are often so full of themselves with their beliefs that they are better than Southerners that it gets nauseating.

It is interesting to note that while the Davis administration had a Jew in a cabinet-level position, Mr. Lincoln had none. And that 2 of the 22 Confederate senators (9%) were Jewish. I don't think the U.S. Senate had any, but I'd have to look that up.

It's also interesting to note that the first general on either side to provide separate religious services for his Jewish soldiers was R.E. Lee; also, the only cemetery in the United States dedicated exclusively to Jewish Civil War veterans is located in Richmond. Its funding was a joint effort by the Hebrew Ladies Association of Richmond and the United Confederate Veterans.

I don't need a historian, I've got John Surratt himself telling us he met personally with Benjamin.

Rash, perhaps foolish, but honorable I maintain in its means and ends; actuated by such motives as would under similar circumstances be a sufficient inducement to thousands of southern young men to have embarked in a similar enterprise. Shortly after our abandonment of the abduction scheme, some dispatches came to me which I was compelled to see through to Richmond. They were foreign ones, and had no reference whatever to this affair. I accordingly left home for Richmond, and arrived there safely on the Friday evening before the evacuation of that city. On my arrival I went to [the] Spotswood Hotel, where I was told that Mr. Benjamin, the then Secretary of War of the Confederate States, wanted to see me. I accordingly sought his presence. He asked me if I would carry some dispatches to Canada for him. I replied "yes." That evening he gave me the dispatches and $200 in gold with which to pay my way to Canada.link

Now, I'll admit that Surratt goes on to deny any CSA government knowledge of the plot, but there's a great deal of research that's come up in the last 30 years or so. A confession that George Atzerodt had given the Baltimore police, but which was subsequently lost until the 1970s says, "Booth said he had met a party in N. York who would get the Prest. certain. They were going to mine the end of the pres. House, near the War Dept. They knew an entrance to accomplish it through." This refers to the failed Harney plot, which was fully approved by Davis. Then there's Booth's multiple visits to Canada, where he'd meet with Confederate agents and return with large sums of money. The best books on the subject are:

Come Retribution: The Confederate Secret Service and the Assassination of Lincoln by Tidwell, Hall & Gaddy

April '65: Confederate Covert Action in the American Civil Warby Tidwell

Blood on the Moon: The Assassination of Abraham Lincolnby Edward Steers

Basically the evidence is pretty undeniable that Booth was an active Confederate agent throughout the war, and that the highest levels of the Confederate government had already approved at least one other plot to assassinate LIncoln.

So, segregation of the dead based on religion.

You know what, seeing as you have these anti-Southern feelings, feel free to never celebrate Shrove Tuesday again. http://www.mardigrasdigest.com/Bureau/Mobile/joe_cain_procession.htm

Admittedly, a bit brief, but it's not really much there that needs to be said. Let's just say the reason we still have Mardi Gras is because a former Confederate officer came up with an ingenious way to defy Union authority. And it's not "Segregation of the Dead" as you so boldly proclaim. It's that in the past, Protestant elements in this country tried to force their will on the rest of the population, so many religions felt it would be great if they could have their own dedicated cemetaries, no different than veteran's cemetaries, pet cemetaries, family cemetaries, etc.
