Bear causes accident that kills motorcyclist (Connecticut)
The Hartford Courant ^ | June 14, 2006 | AP State Wire

GRANBY, Conn. -- A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday morning in an accident caused by a black bear who wandered onto Route 20, town police said.

Francis Osden, 56, of Barkhamsted, died in the crash, which happened just before 8 a.m. as a father and his two children were waiting at a nearby bus stop. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.

Authorities said a car traveling in front of Osden hit the bear, which ran off into the woods and was not found. Osden was trying to avoid that collision and crashed, police said. The driver of the car was not injured.

It was the second incident involving a bear on state roads Tuesday... SNIP

New Haven aka New Heinous has great pizza. Just make sure not to wander too far from Wooster Street or the Green at Yale at night.

Exactly. Not much has changed over the years in New Heinous...

I understand there have been moose sighted up by Barkhampstead reservoir. Heard it from my brother-in-law who lives in East Hartland.

My Father in-law has seen one behind his house in West Granby.

This is a bit off topic, but since it's related to Connecticut wildlife I'll toss it in... I live in a fairly rural part of Fairfield County (the lot sizes here are a bit smaller, though, typically 3 acres, but most of the town is taken up by forested reservoir property), and a while back I discovered a (relatively) huge pile of some kind of animal droppings on my driveway. I'm pretty sure that it was not put there by a bear (or by a human being, either, for that matter).

While there are a number of horses in the neighborhood, it looks to be too small to have been left by a horse. It looks like it's too large to have been left by a dog (but then who knows what Coyote scat looks like). It's not out of the question, though, that it may have been deposited by a moose. Or maybe not. Got any idea of who in this state can give an informed opinion on the subject of scat identification? Maybe the UCONN agricultural extension service, or the CT DEP? I have photographic evidence only...

"Speaking for all Dakotans, I was surprised that there were any woods left east of the Ohio river"

There are actually more trees in New Engleand now than there were when the Pilgrims landed.
