GRANBY, Conn. -- A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday morning in an accident caused by a black bear who wandered onto Route 20, town police said.
Francis Osden, 56, of Barkhamsted, died in the crash, which happened just before 8 a.m. as a father and his two children were waiting at a nearby bus stop. Police said he was not wearing a helmet.
Authorities said a car traveling in front of Osden hit the bear, which ran off into the woods and was not found. Osden was trying to avoid that collision and crashed, police said. The driver of the car was not injured.
It was the second incident involving a bear on state roads Tuesday... SNIP

I have to admit, I also have a rural west-coast perception that everything east of the Mississippi is paved, and I know that's not true. Oh, no... take a trip Back East sometime! :o)
I admit I've only seen just over half of the fifty states, so I've got certain perceptions of other states as well (that are probably wrong). There are certain parts of the northeast that seemed to be paved forever, though, living up to the stereotype.
OMG... a beautiful red fox just walked by my window (I'm serial!)... what timing. ;-D

Nutmeg, that's close to The Lost Acres Fire Department, I wonder if it was before or after. Pretty steep sections of road there.Isn't Lost Acres F.D. on 10/202 near Simsbury? I may be all mixed up. I'll try to take note of the area the next time I'm out that way on Rt. 20...

Keep your camera out! I do, but but those animals usually move faster than I can run and grab it! Plus I need a better camera...

Looking at my post #17, I hope I didn't come across as boastful. Our house was actually quite inexpensive back in the early 90s when we bought it, six acres and all. The place needed work (which we've mostly done), but the key is that we're not near a major city like NYC. We are about 30 minutes from Hartford, but about 2 hours from Boston and 2.5 hours from NYC - not really commuting distance to either.
If this property was in Fairfield County, CT (a NYC bedroom community), it probably would've cost nearly a million dollars. BIG difference between northern and southern (as in Fairfield County or on Long Island Sound) Connecticut...

You don't want any part of Hartford... there were something like 18 shootings there a week or so ago. Zelig and I take bets each night on which city will "win" the lead on the 11pm news in shootings and other violence: Hartford or New Haven. I know that may sound rather cold and heartless, but things are getting REALLY bad in both cities...

New Haven aka New Heinous has great pizza. Just make sure not to wander too far from Wooster Street or the Green at Yale at night.
