DURHAM -- Duke All-American basketball player J.J. Redick was arrested Monday night on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Officers had a license checkpoint station set up in Durham Monday night at South LaSalle Street and Kangaroo Drive, near Duke Manor.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, officers said a 2005 Toyota SUV approached the checkpoint and then the driver made an illegal U-turn away from the checkpoint.

A police officer followed the Toyota, which then turned into the parking lot of the Belmont Apartments on McQueen Drive.

The driver that got out of the vehicle was J.J. Redick. Redick blew a .11 BAC after he parked his vehicle, and officers then charged him with a DUI and unsafe movement of a vehicle for the illegal U-turn.

There were several passengers in Redick's car, but their names are not known at this time.

Redick has been released on a $1,000 cash bond.

Not to mention committing suicide by driving off the roof of a parking grarage.

"WTF?????

A college BBall player is driving a virtually new (expensive) SUV around campus?
"

It seems like most of the Carolina and Duke players drive nice cars. I've seen some really hot rides over the years being driving by "amatuer" athletes in the triangle.

He's the NBA's problem now. Nothing more to see here.

Officers had a license checkpoint station set up in Durham Monday night

Translation, road block to catch DUI suspects and raise money.

It had nothing whatsoever to do with licenses.

"He's the NBA's problem now. Nothing more to see here."

There is lots of difference between a good college player, and an NBA player. I don't see where this guy is NBA material, certainly not good enough to come out early.

And, the NBA has been burned enough times to avoid players with a subsance abuse past.

So, we've got marginal talent (for the NBA) combined with a subsance problem... I'd say that he might play Italian pro ball next year?

Yes. Of course this happens less frequently. Most SUV's stay on their meds.

Or, dare I say it, actually obtain a BSBA. Then he can manage a Holiday Inn.

The speculation on the UNC message boards is that his defense will be that he took 18 shots but only downed 3.

Ba-da-BUM. Thank you. Thankyouverymuch. Try the all-you-can eat buffet. I'm here all week.

Tell me about it! I was a stockholder in the Boston Celtics when they drafted Len Bias from Maryland. He died that night of a drug overdose.

My guess is that Jim Clark will do the same what he did for Bobby Hurley.

LOL. Dook is going thru a rough period. Serves them right.

I lost all respect for the program when that rat faced Coach K. went down with a bad back and passed his losing season off on someone else.

Will Duke now cancel the Basketball season now? Fire the coach?

Now that is funny.

Of course Redick is a Duke grad now. [Or at least out of eligibility.]

It seems like most of the Carolina and Duke players drive nice cars.

It's not just athletes. My husband teaches at a small, unassuming agricultural college where a lot of the students come from rural communities and farms. It's astonishing the cars that some of them drive. In general, they drive nicer cars than the faculty. Not always, of course, but more than you might think.

If you were from around here, you would know that this is because a cheap car won't hold up on these horrible roads.

Suspend the team. Cancel their season. Bring in the Black Panthers as counselors!
