A brown bear killed in defense of life and property by two Soldotna hunters last weekend turned out to be a big one.
Jeff Selinger, Soldotna area management biologist with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, received the carcass and its removed hide from the two hunters who shot it.
Selinger said that after his initial inspection of the kill site, he spent the rest of his weekend removing the meat from the bones of the bear. He then tallied the weight of the remains.
"The meat, heart and lungs weighed in at 465 pounds," ...
Selinger combined this figure with that of the hide, which weighed 200 pounds; bones...
He came up with a combined weight of roughly 850 pounds.

Someone shot my Mother-in-Law?
We've had 24 bear-human encounters out here in rural Ohio so far this year.
Most young males (15lb range) looking for a territory of their own.
The only attack so far was the woman attacked about 20 miles from here by a captive bear that got loose.
It happened so quickly. He just sprung up and was bounding up the hill woofing with his ears back and head down, Zeek said.
Within two leaps and a matter of seconds the bear had closed almost 20 yards, Zeek said. There was only about 20 more yards separating the hunters and the still-charging bruin, so they opened fire with their .270 and 30.350 rifles.
If I had had my rifle slung he would have smoked me, Zeek said.
Since they already had their weapons loaded and in hand, they were able to get off three or four shots.
Mike Ditka is probably a bit irritated at the loss of his drinking companion.
"Say, I've found a perfect spot to catch us a bear."
"How can you be sure?"
"I saw a sign that said Fine for Hunting."
Timmy Treadwell is Deeply Saddened.
If a bear climbs up the tree after you and kills you, it is a black bear.
If the bear pushes over the tree you climbed up and kills you, it is a grizzly bear.
Heck, I live 25 east of Cleveland and we have got 2 black bears running around here. This is not a rural area either!
