Germany, the hosts of the 18th FIFA World Cup™, kick off the tournament on Friday against Costa Rica in Munich (LIVE on ABC at 11:00AM ET).

This represents a change to a tradition established back in 1974 which saw the defending world champions having the honour of getting the proceedings under way. The other two teams in Group A, Poland and Ecuador, will fight it out later in the evening.

Oh you'll see them play hard, in the final game after they've already been eliminated, just like in 2002.

Seriously, Poland played us much better than Germany did that year. That's what must be so frustrating. The talent is there.

"Well at least they kept the opposing goalie from scoring. ;)"

Next game is a totally new opportunity.

I think it was on ESPN. ABC will carry the weekend games live. I missed the opening day game on Spanish TV because my UHF booster wasn't plugged in.

Yes, Univision... they have carried the World Cup for a few decades. If you don't mind the Spanish, their color commentators are extremely knowledgeable. But you don't need Spanish to follow the action; football is a universal human language that crosses all kinds of barriers between the nations of the world.

England's soccer hooligans cause enough troubles already. But maybe things would be different this time.

My condolences guys.
The two goalposts should've counted for something, half a goal each ;)

Watched most of the Poles game on the way home from work at a Pub where they don't like soccer so the sound was down.

It was just as bad with no sound. What a lethargic effort. Frankly, I am in shock over this result.

BTW, never give up. Strange things happen.

It would possibly be double standards. In Korea four years ago they played the national anthems live with singers. In Japan's case the anthem sounded like they were performed live.

Are you starting a thread tomorrow.

Yes, I'll start a new thread around 8:45AM (just before the England match) and ping you all.

Yes, Ballack will play. He was frustrated that he wasn´t allowed to be on the field yesterday. He still doesn´t understand that it was necessary to let him fully recover first before he may start. Klinsmann was absolutely right regarding Ballack.

Let´s wait and see. More than 300 police officers from 13 countries are here - and they´re not here as tourists. The security is tight, but you never really know until something happens ... or not.

Seriously, the Polish hooligans are so bad, that they deter normal Poles from visiting stadiums. The problem is real, and some have made it across the border despite the good efforts of the Polish and German polices.

Some Polish clubs have problems with their hooligans but as far as I remember there was no problems at all with Polish fans when the NT played, at least in the last decade.

BTW: How come Dudek is not even in the squad?

He would be a third goalie anyway. So better to call a youngster to be the third one than Dudek. He was sitting on the bench all the season while Kuszczak (despite this fatal mistake against Colombia had good season in Premiership). Dudek had similar blunders when he was first goalkeeper in Liverpool and in Polish NT as well. He was never a “savior” of our team.

THanks..

The commentator on Norwegian TV also mentioned that they thouhgt Dudek would not handle well being a third choice keeper in the squad.

What about Olisadebe? Too old?

Game day today. First coverage from Germany on ABC. Univision later. I believe there are three games to be broadcast, the first this morning at 9 AM - England vs Uruguay, then 12 noon - Sweden vs Trinidad and Tobago. Univision at 3 PM will have Argentina vs Costa De Marfil. Big day this Saturday!
