Germany, the hosts of the 18th FIFA World Cup, kick off the tournament on Friday against Costa Rica in Munich (LIVE on ABC at 11:00AM ET).
This represents a change to a tradition established back in 1974 which saw the defending world champions having the honour of getting the proceedings under way. The other two teams in Group A, Poland and Ecuador, will fight it out later in the evening.

Anyone know if there is site to view live off the net? Thanks, no TV at work.
Awesome. Look forward to seeing and using.
Thanks
The World Cup has now been declared open at 16:52 local time.
OOOOH! Touchy aren't we?.................
Not true. I was a Defensive End as well as a soccer player. I could ruin most any QB's day.
anyone know where I can watch it online (free)? I'm at work...:-)
The Globo group from Brazil has ALL 64 games on the internet for people living in Brazil.
BBC does the same for UK people.
In the US, if your broadband provider supports http://www.espn360.com, you're in business!
Take a long lunch break and go to a bar nearby:)
hmmm... a five week break from work...
I'm out of here! :-)
I'm in!
I don't think they are quite there yet, I don't think they have the finishers. They will be competitive, but goals will be hard to come by.
Now if Freddy Adu develops into the superstar most think he'll be in four years, watch out then.
I think you can watch it live on one of the ESPN websites but not quite sure if you need to subscribe or not.
15 minutes to go . . . I'm soooooooo excited, I can't wait!!
