Country trio the DIXIE CHICKS have been forced to scrap an upcoming show in Memphis, Tennessee, because locals don't want to see the girls live.
It seems Memphis music fans still haven't forgiven the WIDE OPEN SPACES hitmakers' comments about US President GEORGE W BUSH in 2003.
Singer NATALIE MAINES became a target for Republicans and Bush fans after she declared she was ashamed to come from the same state (Texas) as the President during a concert in London.
Her bandmates were then ostracised for supporting their outspoken singer, and the group's music was banned from some US country music radio stations and their records trampled underfoot at public protests.
And, even though the Chicks have scored a number one album in America with their new release, TAKING THE LONG WAY, it seems many former fans refuse to forgive them.
The trio pulled the September (06) show in Memphis due to poor ticket sales and it looks as if the same fate could befall concerts in Oklahoma City and Houston, Texas. Tickets for both arena shows are failing to sell. Ironically, the trio landed the top-grossing country tour of 2003 when they last performed across America - after the comments made in London.
I actually thought about the Dixie Chicks last Friday night. (shudder) Saw George Jones in concert and he performed 50,000 Names on the Wall dedicated to veterans past and present. A patriotic and touching video played throughout the song and there was sniffling and teary eyes all over the place. At the end was almost deafening thunderous applause and cheers. I couldnt help but think about the contrast to the Chicks and how if they had spouted their BS there that night the audience likely would have rushed the stage and pulled them off it. I'll stick with spending my entertainment dollars on those who dont hate everything I believe in.
I think that would be a drop in quality from the normal t*tty bar dancers.
I'll donate to the defense team.
And a sublte touch of Harold and Maude.
Very nice. Agree completely.
LOL, just to watch old Nat get pounded, yeah, that would be worth it.
Yes.
Shake - Rattle - & Roll.
Don't forget....they can always blame the GOP, Bush, Conservatism, but still never offer a 'better quality' solution.
I know my original comment was off the wall to some degree. However, somedays, I honestly think that such carrying ons would be more productive than what Congress wastes their time in parallel with what Reid, Clinton, Pelosi, Byrd, Daschle, Dean, etc., and the rest of that bunch (oooohhhh let's not forget McCain) spews, defeats, passes and attempts to pass.
Remember when Natalie first made her remarks? Their concert tour had already been sold out, and Ticketmaster allegedly refused to issue refunds. Story after story in the media went out of their way to stress the fact the concerts were ALL SOLD OUT, showing the fans support for the Chicks and their stand.
Wonder if we'll see anything in the mainstream press about the cancellations?
Yes, I remember that litlle bit as well.
The roses would wilt though, so not all is good.
;o)
I hear ya loud and clear.
Nope, just in industry publications mostly.
"Chicksie Dicks"..I like Ditsy Twits..
Or Pricksie Licks
The one in the middle - a man?
If not, truly ugly. I wonder what it looks like unposed with no makeup.
Yeah, she'd leave behind a patch of dead grass too.
al-Zarqawi and the Dixie Chick both bombed on the same day.
I'm gonna need plastic surgery to remove my smile.
