Time for a new FreeRepublic folding@home thread.
Our FreeRepublic team of 342 members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).
Currently, the team is in 99th place (with 985 active CPUs - 39,500 completed Work Units and nearly 7 million points).
This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 18 folding threads)

WooHoo !!!!
Congrats on 100,000 !!!!
p2358_CI2 = 572 pts.
Got a few system upgrades in the works, look out andyk!
Should I just be patient and assume the problem is on the other end?
A sample of the logfile:
[11:23:09] + Attempting to send results
[11:23:10] - Unknown packet returned from server, expected ACK for results
[11:23:10] Could not transmit unit 03 to Collection server; keeping in queue.
In case you may of missed it, here's a link to my comment: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1645733/posts?q=1&&page=304#287
What? Who, me? Fishing for compliments? Nah - I'd never do that, LOL.
No need to reply (unless, of course, the prose moves you, heheh.)
BTW, I just moved up to # 56 on our team stats - WooHoo! Of course, I'll probably get knocked down again by the time you read this, but I just keep on foldin'.
Hope everybody had a Happy & Safe 4th!
;-)

Thank you. Thank you very much. (deep, slow bows)
:-D
I had the same problem earlier it sent out eventually.
Heh. Just kidding.
I don't think the fact that there doesn't seem to be any great orators around is likely to be a new phenomenon. They tend to be so few and far between that every generation probably feels that they are without them-- otherwise, they wouldn't be as noticeable.
Also, I don't think it's necessarily the orators themselves, rather the importance of events lends strength and clarity to the particular oration. For example, President Bush is not someone I would consider to be a very eloquent speaker-- and yet, he's stepped up to the plate and delivered some fine words when the occasion warranted.
Another possible factor: outstanding oration is easier to spot when there's consensus on the subject matter. Very little of that at the moment, even just on our side of the debate.
Otherwise, I agree with your rant completely-- and it was excellently done, BTW!
It was good, but by the time I recoved from the fifth I had on the fourth, sometime on the sixth, I forgot to reply.
Coupe de Monde? I think it's something French.
Ubuntu help needed. Yesterday I successfully installed Ubuntu on my smaller hard drive. It was version 5.04. So, today I downloaded the ISO [ubuntu 6.06 server i386 ISO], burned it, etc. and installed it on the same hard drive. Installation went smoothly and quickly [MUCH more quickly than the 5.04 install]. The only problem is this: Instead of opening to the desktop screen like 5.04 did yesterday, this opens to terminal and it waits for a command. Needless to say, I don't know linux commands from Chinese. Either I did something wrong or I need to change a setting [which I don't know how to do]. Could one of you enlighten me? Do I need to reinstall?
If I had to bet, I'm thinking you probably grabbed the server image by mistake. You want the desktop flavor.
Bumping for future Reference
Egon is correct. You want the desktop not the server.
I used the live DVD for my install. I did this because I already have debian stable and testing on that box and wanted to evaluate before adding another. Now I have all three.
The live DVDs are located here, I used BitTorrent to download them.
Ubuntu uses GNOME:

Some people consider KDE easier to use. Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE instead on GNOME.
Kubuntu uses the K Desktop Environment:

Thanks. For the time that I used Mandrake, I found that I preferred the KDE desktop to Gnome's. I think I'll try Kubuntu.
This has been a real learning experience.
You can get to the Kubuntu site from the Ubuntu front page or directly here: http://www.kubuntu.org/

If I had to administer as many systems as you do, I'd have to have a fifth every day, heheh. 8-)
But I'm not admitting to anything - I plead the Fifth.
Hope your Fourth was happy. (Sounds like it was, haha)

The DUmmies had their best day in 4 months, but we had an even better day and are now 6 million points ahead of them.
