I have been out of the loop, but I see nothing much has changed.

Nifong has yet to be tarred and feathered.

If I'm not mistaken, Krodg -- this is a "white" Mangum. There's lots on this baggage of trouble...if it is he. Did some digging around on him a month or so back.

Helpful cocaine trafficker gets 20 years
Cellmate unlikely for 'Little Elvis'

Author: JALEH HAGIGH; STAFF WRITER

DURHAM -- Elmer "Bud" Oakley's five-year odyssey with the criminal justice system ended Friday, when he was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for running one of the largest cocaine
trafficking operations in Durham's history.

With his small hands planted firmly on the defense table, the diminutive Oakley displayed little emotion as Superior Court Judge Jack Hooks Jr. announced his sentence.

In addition to the 20 years of active time, the judge gave Oakley, 56, an additional 85 years in prison, suspended for five years. The judge warned that the suspended sentence will continue to hang over his head when he's eventually released from prison and placed on probation.

If he violates probation, the judge said, "I expect him to be removed from society for the balance of his life."

Oakley, a wispy figure known in his Henderson neighborhood as "Little Elvis," said after the hearing that he was relieved the case was finally over.

"Five years is a long time," said Oakley, sporting a black and white polka-dot shirt, black suede cowboy boots and a pompadour.

Oakley is expected to be held in protective custody in Central Prison in Raleigh for now and possibly transferred to another maximum-security prison after that.

Concerns about his safety have been raised because Oakley has cooperated with local and federal authorities by identifying more than 40 drug co-defendants operating in New York and Florida, including several illegal aliens from Colombia.

With Oakley's help, most of the drug peddlers received sentences ranging from 15 years to 60 years. Several are still serving time in the state prison system.

In imposing the sentence, the judge noted that Oakley "rendered substantial assistance" to authorities who ran the 15-month investigation, which began in 1988.

District Attorney Jim Hardin Jr. said it's likely Oakley will be held in a single cell in a restricted area away from the general inmate population.

Hardin, 37, who directed the case for almost six years, declined to comment on the sentence. He, too, appeared happy to have the episode behind him.

In the beginning, the Oakley investigation looked like the kind of case that could launch the career of a young prosecutor like Hardin. In the end, however, his opponent in this year's district attorney's race turned Bud Oakley into an albatross.

Former prosecutor Pat Evans blasted Hardin for striking a deal with a major drug dealer. She also accused Hardin of promising Oakley he wouldn't serve any prison time. Hardin vehemently denied the charge.

Evans declined to comment on the sentence Friday.

Oakley's attorney, Art Vann, said the punishment fits the crime.

"I think it's a fair sentence, for the services he rendered," Vann said.

Several other defense attorneys said privately they were surprised by the severity of the sentence and thought Oakley would get only 10 years.

Still, other court officials said Oakley might end up serving less than 10 years given the cap on the state's prison population.

Oakley pleaded guilty in 1990 to 43 trafficking and conspiracy charges, which could have brought him a maximum of 2,460 years in prison. His sentencing was put off so he could help authorities by giving them information and court testimony.

The hearing Friday marked the end of the largest cocaine trafficking investigation in Durham's history.

The investigation culminated in 1990 with the arrest of 47 defendants, which helped break up drug networks in New York City, Durham and Florida. In the end, investigators seized 77 pounds of cocaine, $74,000 in cash and eight homes.

Oakley himself was responsible for bringing 750 kilograms of cocaine into Durham between 1985 and 1989, Hardin said. A kilogram is about 2 pounds.

Despite his small stature, Oakley was considered a drug kingpin and a well-known figure in southeast Durham, where he grew up and could be seen driving around in a spiffy Corvette.

In some ways, he was a simple man, living in a modest home and often eating crackers and a soda for lunch. He usually didn't carry a gun, authorities said.

Since his arrest, Oakley said, he has traveled across the country, living in Las Vegas and -- oddly enough -- New York City and Florida, where his drug cohorts lived. Recently, Oakley settled in Henderson and was painting houses.

Forget the Facts
Duke's president has a history of allowing public relations to trump principle.

It can be said that all the Mangums of Durham, both black and white, are related by blood or marriage.

Thanks for the link xoxoxox, I have researched as much as possible via the net and came to the conclusion that it goes back to the days of slavery. The negroe slaves adopted their owners sir name and so it is. Durham among others certainly has its history.

I still wonder what relation CGM is to Dr. Elmira Mangum

Everyone hold your breath for Susan Estrich to acknowledge that the case is DEAD --- now that the only other BLACK WITNESS at the scene says the "rape claim is a crock "...

Your face is already blue...

Susan is just another leftist ass-hat ----- with an agenda.

Once again, the ignorant Black Racists (forgive the redundancy) have been proved wrong.....as usual..
