Visual Tour: 20 Things You Won't Like About Windows Vista
Computerworld ^ | June 01, 2006 | Scot Finnie

The same thing happened with Windows XP. When Beta 2 arrived, I found myself torn between what was new and good about the operating system, and what was new and bad.

Significant negatives back in 2001 included product activation (which doesn't affect Microsoft volume licensing customers), changes to the network-configuration user interface and the way XP interacted with other versions of Windows on small networks. Was Windows XP truly better than Windows 2000? It was a toss-up in many ways. In the end, I went with the improved app compatibility and user interface improvements of XP. But it wasn't by much.

Well, Microsoft just upped the ante on internal conflict with the release of Vista Beta 2. It boils down to this: The software giant is favoring security and IT controls over end-user productivity. Don't get me wrong, security and IT manageability are very good things. But some of the people actually using the Beta 2 Vista software describe their experience as akin to that of a rat caught in a maze.

Photoshop CS2 May Not Come to Intel-Macs

they may be close, but the the same... kind of like maybe win98 and winME? some drivers had to be special for winME.

No doubt MS has been taking forever, but I'm glad that they are sticking to their guns on the delay. I have tested the beta and its nowhere near ready. If they release another turd like winME it would be a major bust. I hope they delay it even further to make sure they have it right, Q2 '07

Isn't CS3 scheduled for a First Quarter '07 release anyway? And it will be a universal binary? I'm sure anyone who is using a PPC Powerbook or Power Mac can wait that long to upgrade. They can't even get the Intel version of a Power Mac yet anyway which is what the most serious ones would be using anyway.

The Universal version of Photoshop CS3 will come to both platforms at the same time (and only about 1 month after a universal version of Photoshop CS2 could be released). The decision not to expend developer time on a Universal release of CS2 was entirely economical and proper.

In addition, Echo, contrary to your ignorant assertions, Photoshop CS2 DOES indeed run, unmodified, on both platforms and aside from the one variable of speed, with the same functionality. One platform will run it faster than the other but that is the case on any piece of OS X software on computers with differing speed CPUs. As a matter of fact, Photoshop CS2 runs FASTER on Macintels than it does on 90% of MacPPCs it runs on. Only on on the fastest 10% of PowerPC Macs does it run faster than on the fastest currently available MacIntels.

Professionals are using CS2 on both platforms and being productive. Your point is invalid.

This has been explained to you before but you still choose to spread FUD instead of facts.

Yes. The point the article was making was that diverting human resources to retro-fit CS2 as a universal binary would delay the development and release of CS3... and BOTH would require an upgrade fee. It makes more business sense to keep the deveoplers and programers working on CS3, especially as the target release dates would have been only weeks apart, and ask their installed users to pay only one update fee for CS3 instead of two.

This has been explained about ten times to Echo Talon but facts don't seem to penetrate or make a difference in his FUD posts.

I'm very happily running the new version of Ubuntu Linux, 6.06, "Dapper Drake".

In terms of eye candy and ease of use...well, judge for yourself -

Windows Vista is not necessary...one doesn't even necessarily need a new machine - this is on a laptop that's 2 1/2 years old, and it's running very, very well now.

Well, obviously "something" is different between macintel and the other macs, this CS2 is just an example. 98 and ME arent ALL that different and the marketshare chart has them separated, even though MOST drivers say win98/winME and WinXP/Win2000

It was released on June 1. I put in a new hard drive as well - a Seagate Momentus 7200 rpm. With Dapper and the new hard drive, it boots like lightning.

My grandfather taught me to avoid waste whenever possible - fix up what you have, make it work better. He would have heartily approved of Linux.

I have a question about osx like when the first version came out whatever it was called "panther" or whatever then "leopard" then "lion" or whatever did you have to pay for the upgrades or was it a free download like a service pack?

Dang... looks like OS X - just reverse the location of the window control balls and it would be identical.

I haven't tested my machine against the new MacBook, but performance on this laptop is comparable or better than what my mother has running on her G4 15in Powerbook.

It's actually a theme one selects on Gnome called Yattacier (available at art.gnome.org).

I also used icons from a set called Dropline Nuovo. Took about 5 minutes to set up.
