Oh well. I would trade the modem for 4 USB ports any day of the week. I haven't had to use dial up in about 4 years. If I ever had to I might cry.

I've never quite figured out how you save money by doing this, unless your time isn't worth anything, or you work on computers for a living and do it on company time. If a day of work is worth $200, it seems to me that you'd spend as much time researching, ordering, building, installing and debugging as the computer costs. If you want to claim you can build a machine from scratch for less, please include time spent researching your equipment choices, ordering them or going and getting them, assembling them, installing software and working out the kinks. If you do it as your business or mom and dad support you, or you live in someone's garage and spend all your time dicking around with computer stuff instead of being employed, raising a family, or other things that normally constitute having a life, consider that for an average computer user, the time spent would be around three to four times what you would spend.

The point is, most people don't have the time or inclination to go out and build their systems from scratch. I buy pre-built systems for the same reason I have someone mow my lawn. I'd rather make $500 in the time that it would take me to save $200 by building a computer from scratch.

Interestingly, the Mac Mini is about the size of a car stereo headunit - and it's become wildly popular among the CarPC crowd.

Yes and with $600 and an army of Chinese slave labor I can build a supercomputer that will blow away any computer sold on the market.
It will run Linux and many others.

So what?

Let me know when you catch Dell and Apple. Best of luck.

Wow, talk about a blatant copy! As usual, Apple innovates, PC manufacturers follow.

For that same six hundred dollars intelligently spent at MarketPro shows, I can put together a PC which will blow the Mac into the weeds

How big will this box be? How loud will it be? What's the power consumption? Will it come with all the integrated software? Will the snazzy UI be accelerated? Can graphics and video apps have their filters crunched real-time by the graphics card (prepare to blow $500 for that alone on a PC)?

" It can only run windows xp "

It can run any OS that can be installed on a PC, namely Linux and BSD. Hell, you could probably run BeOS on it if you wanted to.

Yeah but the average consumer won't run Linux let alone BeOS.
I don't want that crappy non-OS X running piece of crap. :)

At least one error - for the Mac Mini - under "Windows Support" it lists ??? (3rd party), yet Apple has released for free - an avenue for Windows Support.

Look at the date of the shoot-out... March 25, 2006... a few weeks before Boot Camp or Parallels
