Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - pellucid
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/31/2006 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

pellucid • \puh-LOO-sid\ • adjective

1. admitting maximum passage of light without diffusion or distortion *
2. reflecting light evenly from all surfaces
3. easy to understand

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

The coastal waters were clean and pellucid, allowing us to easily identify the marine life on the ocean floor.

Did you know?
"Pellucid" ultimately derives from the Latin "lucçre" ("to shine"), which in turn contains the root "luc-" ("light"). "Pellucid" is formed from "per" ("through") plus "lucidus" ("lucid, clear"). "Pellucid" has many shining relatives in English. Among the offspring of "lucçre" are "translucent" (essentially, "clear enough to allow light to pass through"), "elucidate" ("to make clear, explain"), "lucent" ("luminous" or "clear"), and of course "lucid" itself (which can mean "shining," "mentally sound," or "easily understood"). Another related word is "Lucifer" (literally, "light-bearer"). Other relatives—such as "lackluster" ("lacking brightness"), "illustrate" (originally, "to make bright"), and "lustrous" ("shining" or "radiant")—trace from the related verb "lustrare" ("to brighten"). Clearly, "pellucid" is just one of a family of brilliant terms.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

As long as you don't stay away so long you start getting the shakes and other DT symptoms.

1. The Prince of Non-Pellucidity, Bubba Clintoon, came to Houston yesterday to eulogize Lloyd Bentsen. Bubba waxed eloquent on the afterlife, souls gone to be with God, etc.

2. All of Houston/Harris County is now under a flood warning.

Coincidence?? I think not.

I think it was Paul Newman, but I remember there was an actor who was an anomaly in Hollywood because he was married to the same woman for many many years, and he was asked in an interview what makes a man a good lover. He replied something along the lines of: "the ability to satisfy one woman for a lifetime".

Charlie Sheen is a certified dirtbag...not to mention a real star among the tin-foil hat crowd. (He thinks the World Trade Center was intentionally leveled by George W. Bush on 9/11/01, and the 2 airliners were just a ruse.)

The windows in my bedroom only seem pellucid when I am hung over and stayed out way to late the night before.

When it comes to describing how most of our elected officials communicate - while wading through deep muck - pellucidity would be the last word on my mind.

This pellucid former marine is alive and well. Not so of one of his would-be robbers.

Martin's 17th birthday was earlier this month. Relatives said she was dating one of the boys who was arrested. A 10th- grader at Grady High, Martin was scheduled to take a final exam in social studies Tuesday, relatives said.

As one poster stated it - she took her final in anti-social studies and failed. Great thread going.
