Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 31, 2006 - pellucid
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/31/2006 | The Janitor

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

pellucid • \puh-LOO-sid\ • adjective

1. admitting maximum passage of light without diffusion or distortion *
2. reflecting light evenly from all surfaces
3. easy to understand

* Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.

Example sentence:

The coastal waters were clean and pellucid, allowing us to easily identify the marine life on the ocean floor.

Did you know?
"Pellucid" ultimately derives from the Latin "lucçre" ("to shine"), which in turn contains the root "luc-" ("light"). "Pellucid" is formed from "per" ("through") plus "lucidus" ("lucid, clear"). "Pellucid" has many shining relatives in English. Among the offspring of "lucçre" are "translucent" (essentially, "clear enough to allow light to pass through"), "elucidate" ("to make clear, explain"), "lucent" ("luminous" or "clear"), and of course "lucid" itself (which can mean "shining," "mentally sound," or "easily understood"). Another related word is "Lucifer" (literally, "light-bearer"). Other relatives—such as "lackluster" ("lacking brightness"), "illustrate" (originally, "to make bright"), and "lustrous" ("shining" or "radiant")—trace from the related verb "lustrare" ("to brighten"). Clearly, "pellucid" is just one of a family of brilliant terms.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Had a migraine today (reason I'm writing late) so my reaction to any pellucid stimuli was pretty painful, to say the least.

Hi teachies.......

Pleas exuse me from June 1 (Thursday) class. My friend's daddy is in the hospital and after we take our girls to school in the morning we are going to ride down so she can see him because June 1 is his birthday. Then, when we get back (hospital is 45 miles away)we have to finish getting all badges and patches ironed or sewed on to the girls' Brownie vests because tomorrow night is "end of yesr ceremonies".......

I gottsa a busy day and don't see being near the puter until sometime after 9pm........yikes.

You're excused. It sounds like more important things need to be done.

Good luck-it sounds like you will be meeting yourself going in the opposite direction today-and prayers for your friend's dad, too.

It is likely to start raining any minute and I've got an estimate to do in an area I'm not familiar with, so I'd better leave now in case I need "lost time"-I'll come to class later.

Good story, Bob. Being full of hot air, getting up into the air seems reasonable. Which makes me wonder why we don't see James Earl Carter, F'n Kerry, the Hildebeast et al floating around all over the joint.

You're absolutely right. To some extent she may deserve some blame, but she almost exonerated herself with me when she said, "Sometimes I look at my boys and say to myself, Lillian, y'all should have stayed a virgin."

I'd like to wait until there's a classroom so everyone can see it, but here's an $85 million lawsuit we can all support! Go, Sarge!!

Merning, Argh!

LoL Those three are dino-drags. Their hot air just keeps them gasbagging, while we are gasping for air.
