'X Men 3' Hits History Books (DaVinci Code Box Office Down 67%)
Fox News ^ | 05/27/06 | Roger Friedman

"X Men 3: The Last Stand" took in almost $45 million on Friday and landed in the history books. It is now the second highest opener of all time, right behind "Star Wars: Attack of the Sith."

Insiders are predicting that the Brett Ratner directed third episode in the X Men trilogy could do as much as $150 million over the four day Memorial Day weekend. Word of mouth and "tracking" are so strong that "X Men 3," with no real rivals, should shatter all kinds of records by time the numbers are in officially on Tuesday.

Meantime, audiences may be cooling off to normal levels for "The Da Vinci Code." After a monster first weekend, Friday night's numbers--a respectable $10.2 million--were off by two thirds from a week ago when the movie opened. "Da Vinci" could still have a very good weekend, and luckily it made its money back with that strong start.

Well considering part 3 is already filmed as well for Pirates...it sounds like you are in for the long haul! LOL...one of my friends actually plays a small role in part 3.

I was talking with my Sister in Law and her fiancee today, they LOVED it.

Normally I don't correct spelling mistakes, but unless your sister-in-law is a lesbian, she has a fiance, not a fiancee... (Just a helpful tip to avoid a potentially awkward social situation later!)

I wasn't a big fan of the first two, but I really despised this one. I think they could have taken the scene of Jean Grey flying out of the water like she did waaaaay back Uncanny X-men when after piloting the spacship back to earth and landing in the water she flys up screaming about being power and life incarnate as Phoenix, shown Professor X doing some tests on her and saying she's fine, then basically lifted the entire original Dark Phoenix saga from the comic books, starting with the introduction of Kitty Pryde all the way through to Jean's death.
That's how I would have done it. Also, I can't see Magneto treating Mystique like that, and I can't see Mystique taking that for him either.

I can't imagine it will break much ground the first one didn't cover so if he has seen that he will probably be fine. Although, Davy Jones is pretty creepy looking.

Hence the studio's inspired casting of Johnny Depp in the lead.

The action brings the men, Johnny Depp brings the women. I personally thought Kiera Knightly's character had more chemistry with Captain Sparrow than with Will Turner.

The entire Dark Phoenix saga in a two-hour movie? Not possible. It'd have to be a mini-series. Plus, you've got the whole backstory of the aliens and everything to give the resolution any context.

I saw the movie today and enjoyed it. Liked the fact that they finally portrayed the Danger Room, though I'd rather it have been lower tech instead of a lift from Star Trek. Enjoyed seeing the fastball special and a bit of a Sentinels tease. I'm hoping the presence of Bolivar Trask means they'll bring in the robots for the next one.

And the Ghost Rider trailer looked pretty cool.

Supposed to be "Revenge," right?

I wonder if the book is that goofy.

From what I've heard, the book is even GOOFIER.

Well, that's why they sell chocolate and vanilla. I didn't mind the changes (given the limitations of the movie format, some changes had to be made). Oh, and I think they got the character of Magneto perfectly in the movie. He's always been a user, quick to discard any "tool" that was no longer useful to him. But again, that's just my opinion, and your mileage may vary (and apparently does). :)

Didn't see the Ghost Rider trailer at our theater. The Shi-ar could just be explained as a type of intergalactic police force. Yeah, it probably would take 2 two hour movies to expain it all, but I still think it would have worked.
I really hated this movie. There were some good parts, but not enough. I also have despised the casting since day one. Think about Vivica Fox as Storm and Glenn Danzig as Wolverine. That said, I do think the casting of Kitty Pryde was really excellent.

Well that really depends on which version of Magneto you mean:). I still say Mystique wouldn't "take a bullet" for him, although, later on in the movie, they nailed her character, a woman scorned and all.

I agree. The island scene with the fight over the rum is my personal fave.

Jack Sparrow: Stop! No, not good! What are you doing? Not Good! You're burning all the food, the shade... the RUM!

Elizabeth Swann: Yes, the rum is gone.

Jack Sparrow: Why is the rum gone?!

Elizabeth Swann: One, because rum is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels. Two, that signal is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out looking for me; do you really think that there is even the slightest chance that they won't see it?!

Jack Sparrow: But why is the rum gone?!

though I'd rather it have been lower tech instead of a lift from Star Trek.

While I admit it would have been cool to see Angel flying through the giant rotating spanner (that goes back to X-Men #1!) the holographic Danger Room in the comic actually predates Star Trek: TNG. So technically, Star Trek lifted it from X-Men.

I collected X-Men between 1982 to 2000. I haven't seen X3. I did see the first two and thought they were very different from the comic books but still entertaining. I would be surprised if the movies followed even half of what was in the books. I don't imagine the upcoming movies would include the Shi'ar, Mojo or the Mojoverse, the Shadow King, the Brood, and many of the other other-worldly/other-dimensional story arcs.

I agree with you there, she was always too much of a leader in her own right to be Magneto's "assistant".

I guess I look on it as, the movies are an interpretation of the characters and stories... some things they got right and some things they got wrong. In my opinion they got more things right than wrong overall, but I can see where there's room for disagreement.

It would be interesting to see the brood, but it would have to be a take-off of the short story arc where Havok and Polaris (not introduced on film yet) find out a ship carrying the brood crash-landed on earth. But it might seem too much like an Aliens rip-off.
I also thought that some parts of the movie was a game of "Let's see how many obscure characters we can shove into a scene."
Also, another major gripe, Juggernaut is NOT a mutant!!

I remember the first time I read the scene where Havok and Polaris find the Brood ship. I recall it took Claremont several months to get back to that story arc. I really enjoyed his style of story-telling.

I can just imagine that the film makers packed a lot of mutants into X3. They did so in the first two as well and it did seem to detract from the story.

Someone told me Juggernaut was in this movie. I wondered if there was some background given about his origin.

I thought it was terrible. It's almost as though the actors were contractually obligated to appear in it. Awful all around.
