More like the vampire is the victim of the lich.
The lich needs the energy and immortal vitality of the vampire to envigorate and regenerate.

While a cabal is a cabal, it is considered evil by those in power.

After the cabalists come into power, the name is changed.

In my book, the entrenched interests were the evil ones. The plotters against them were only described as conspirators.

After the action was over, it was referred to as "The Day of Announcement."

I'm such an easy-going guy.

Hmmm. I think you're on the right track.

Among other things, the vampires are driven into evil action by the cabalists. Otherwise they would be inoffensive, right?

Still, it looks to me as though the cabalists have all the firepower. Can your vampires prevail against them?

The question of why a lich would need a vampire is key.

As a food source or as a food provider?

Maybe the lich could be something like the Deadman in the Garrett Files. Dead and unable to move yet mentally awake and with telepathic/telekinetic abilities.

Exactly.

Someone sent me a graphic once...it read: I love my computer because all my friends live inside it....

There is truth to that...

Something that could be a predator of vampires would have to be one bad critter.
Of course, vampires would have to have some form of a defense as anything that has a predator has a defense of some sort.
Perhaps vampires can make small telepathic suggestions, maybe even move small items telekinetically.
Perhaps some form of camouflage.

Of course, a vampire that has just fed would be quite powerful, considering.
Perhaps the cabalists force feed their captured vamps and then drain their essence to fuel their ancient leader?

"The question of why a lich would need a vampire is key."

That depends on what story you want to tell, and who you want the bad guys to be.

It is very mainstream today to have the rich industrialists be the heavies. Of course, you could have that just be a lifestyle and cover story for the real bad guys.

Any group of immortals striving to remain unseen among a populace would tend to develop bitter rivalries. Depending on your sympathies, one group can be regarded as the good guys.

... regarded as the good guise.

Sorry! I got distracted. I do also like the food chain analogy. You could even intimate that there are other forms either parallel to, or even above the ones described. Sentient or not.

I was thinking of having the vamps have some corporate work as a front to keep scrutiny off of them.
(Blood plasma distributors would be out, but plausible enough work.)

The Order of the Steel Pomegranate guys would also have corporate interests, real estate, stocks, and shipping interests.
As one has to fund the probably expensive equipment needed to 'maintain' a Lich.
Or more than one.

Look for the guys that have good charity work to be the bad guys.

You may also want to consider who may be the natural allies of your protagonists.

I'm picturing a tense but friendly meeting between your main guy, and a European Cardinal.

Yes, 'hunting for friends' I believe that would be called, especially after hearing of several mysterious disappearances of vamps.
Heck, could even have some lycanthropes in there as well.

There isn't enough drive to complete a book between the
two of us... we get that from our grandfather, me thinks.
Our minds wander too much in too many directions. I
was writing a "book" myself... I was even getting some
advice from people here. I haven't touched it in months.

Oh, yeah... hello. :-)

"There isn't enough drive to complete a book between the two of us..."

Crap. First step, write the outline. Divide the tasks. Set a schedule.

Don't be so fershlugginer lazy. I've written four books just in the last few years. I'm working on several others.

You have fingers; you have minds. Get to work.

My problem is a combination of my wandering mind &
my inspiration drying up. It takes forever to regenerate.
I actually haven't written anything in a while.
