Student Suspended Over Chewing Gum (Pittsburgh)

LOWER BURRELL, Pa. -- A Lower Burrell school student is facing a three-day suspension for sharing gum with a classmate.

Jolt chewing gum has caffeine and ginseng.

The Lower Burrell school superintendent said consuming and passing out the gum violates the school's drug awareness policy. That's because caffeine is considered a stimulant.

Parents told Channel 11 they did not understand the suspension.

Resident Elizabeth Grombacher said, "I think it's stupid. Everything's getting too politically correct it's so wrong."

"It's probably just like Mountain Dew or something like that. If it's got a lot of caffeine in it and they probably sell the pop at school,” parent Nita Serene said.

Jolt chewing gum is sold over the counter at drug stores and vitamin distributors.

I remember back in the 70s/80s, a number of companies started producing legal, caffeine-based "knockoffs" of popular amphetamines (Black Beauties, etc.)

LOL .......... I hate to admit this ...... but what the heck ............ my wife and I used to be house painters way back then (worked for the very coolest and highly respected interior decorators).

Anyhow, we knew some shady characters back then , we got a great deal and bought a very big plastic container of (I think 1000) those black beauties....... to help us get through the rigors of the days of painting.

They certainly worked well, but one odd thing happened every once in a while to me ............. after I'd have one in the morning, every once in a while my upper lip would "blow up" ....... sorta like getting hit by a jab from Cassius Clay.

It happened about a dozen times ......... then we decided never to get them again!

;-)

No, he did a GREAT job!

Don't misread what I just said. I was just commenting on the fact that the gun was locked away and not ready to use. I don't know much about guns and gun ownership - though I advocate gun use. But isn't it supposed to be ready to use in an emergency?

Stick that gum on your forehead

You mean on your nose while sitting in the display window of Home Ec with all the smocked pullows during changing of classes! I tell you I'm scarred for life!!

I've had Jolt gum... its nasty tasting stuff.. I'd want these kids examined if they kept it in their mouth more than 10 seconds... something is wrong with em.

...they probably sell the pop at school

Haven't heard it called 'pop' in years.
Here in Texas all soda is called 'coke cola',
but there are a few folks who say 'soda waters'.

tagline question ---------------------------

The whacko/sleazoid/lying/somewhat overweight/stripper/drunk-as-a-skunk/whore/dancer/con-artist told investigators that she had been raped by three guys earlier in her money-making career back in your state.

So .......... get it now?

;-)

So , if you see strange men lurking about in groups of three - especially in North Carolina, RUN!!!!

Rememer????

****

Beeman's chewing gum was introduced in the late 1800s by Edward E. Beeman, a Cleveland druggist. According to a December, 1891 Harper's Magazine advertisement, the Beeman Chemical Company of Cleveland, Ohio produced this "Delicious Remedy for all Forms of Indigestion" as well as pure pepsin.

Oh, I gotcha.

I live a little over an hour from Durham and have been avoiding the coverage like the plague.
I can barely watch my local news; it's like Greta van Facelift has invaded it.

I am not surprised in the least at the brouhaha. My dad's side of the family is from Durham and I have relatives who live there.

Thank God my grandfather had the good sense to buy a farm in eastern NC long ago!

Nita Serene? Is that anything like "Serenity Now!"?

Jolt chewing gum has caffeine and ginseng.

I'd have to google this and see where I can purchase it. I remember Jolt soda. Next to Surge, it rocked.
