Student Suspended Over Chewing Gum (Pittsburgh)

LOWER BURRELL, Pa. -- A Lower Burrell school student is facing a three-day suspension for sharing gum with a classmate.

Jolt chewing gum has caffeine and ginseng.

The Lower Burrell school superintendent said consuming and passing out the gum violates the school's drug awareness policy. That's because caffeine is considered a stimulant.

Parents told Channel 11 they did not understand the suspension.

Resident Elizabeth Grombacher said, "I think it's stupid. Everything's getting too politically correct it's so wrong."

"It's probably just like Mountain Dew or something like that. If it's got a lot of caffeine in it and they probably sell the pop at school,” parent Nita Serene said.

Jolt chewing gum is sold over the counter at drug stores and vitamin distributors.

Ginseng helps a young man hit the curve ball.

I recall a study claiming caffeine improved test scores. PA schools certainly can't be against that.

It probably does help, unless too much of it would cause you to be too nervous and anxious.

I certainly didn't take a sedative right before my college boards (SAT's) back in the 60's.

It's also used instead of ritalin. A cup of coffee in the morning helps some kids calm down and concentrate.

That has always baffled me. I find that even one strong cup of coffee in the morning makes me jittery.

Hmmm?

I've been drinking coffee for breakfast since I was 13 (40 years now). I have a few cups during the day and usually have the pot working all weekend. It's a matter of getting used to it.

It has no effect on me. It has no effect on me.

If it has no effect on you why do you drink it?
