NASHVILLLE, Tenn., May 22 (UPI) -- It appears the war U.S. country radio stations mounted against the politically outspoken Dixie Chicks has not abated in the least.
The band is promoting "Taking the Long Way," its first album since Natalie Maines told a London audience in 2003 she was ashamed to be from the same state as U.S. President George Bush. The comment sparked a radio boycott of the group's music.
Although the album hits stores Tuesday, the first two singles from the album are not getting widespread airplay, Billboard.com reported Monday.
The first single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," only peaked at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and the second single, "Everybody Knows," is moving downward after its peak at No. 48.
WKIS FM in Miami reported it pulled "Not Ready to Make Nice" due to listener complaints after only one week.
The program director at KUBL/KKAT in Salt Lake City told Billboard he was angered by its "self-indulgent and selfish lyrics."
Neither the Chicks or their label, Columbia Records, would speak to Billboard for its article.
It doesn't say much for their careers that they have to resort to agitprop to get any press.
LOL!! Very good.
"I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith," Maguire said. "We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
I guess, technically, they are not really insulting Reba McEntire , just the uncool people who like to listen to her.
Can you tell me what they did to Reba? I was one of the lucky ones to see Reba in the b'way revival of "Annie Get Your Gun." She was beyond wonderful. I sat behind the movie director Stanley Donen ("Funny Face") and Elaine May; I'll never forget them jumping to their feet when she took her call.
I think so too. I think this whole thing has been calculated. Calling their former audiences "rednecks," trashing Reba, trashing the president. They're trying to shift their listener base from country to pop/rock by playing on the prejudices and ignorance of that pop/rock audience.
The smart and decent thing to do would be to just garner as large an audience as you can for your music by making it as good as you can, but the Chicks are neither smart nor decent.
Dixie Chicks? Here's a quarter. Call someone who gives a damn.
Thanks. I'm a huge fan of Reba and Toby. They understand their fans. (People should learn from the consumate country star, Dolly Parton. She keeps her opinions of politicians to herself but is still patriotic.)
"I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it"
Eyeguy is REALLY happy to be a really uncool person who doesn't get "it".
The Chicks are trying to be the straight version of the Indigo Girls.
Let's send them to Iran!
Put on the Skynyrd and turn it up.
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Red White And Blue Lyrics
We don't have no plastic L.A. Frynds,
ain't on the edge of no popular trend.
Ain't never seen the inside of that magazine GQ.
We don't care if you 're a lawyer, or a texas oil man,
or some waitress busting ass in some liquor stand.
If you got Soul
We hang out with people just like you
My hair's turning white,
my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue,
we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
Yes you could say
we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue
Ride our own bikes To Sturgis
we pay our own dues,
smoking camels, drinking domestic BREWS
You want to know where I have been
just look at my hands
Yeah, I've driven by the White House,
Spent some time in jail.
Momma cried but she still wouldn't pay my bail.
I ain't been no angel,
But even God, he understands.
My hair's turning white,
my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue,
we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
Yes you could say
we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue
Yeah that's right!
My Daddy worked hard, and so have I,
paid our taxes and gave our lives
to serve this great country
so what are they complaining about
Yeah we love our families, we love our kids
you know it is love that makes us all so rich
That's where were at,
If they don't like it they can just
get the HELL out!
Yeah!
My hair's turning white,
my neck's always been red,
my collar's still blue,
we've always been here
just trying to sing the truth to you.
Yes you could say
we've always been,
Red, White, and Blue
oh..oh..Red, White, and Blue....
Red, White, and Blue
oh..oh....Red, White, and Blue
I heard (a few milliseconds) of this garbage on a local Austin radio station a few months ago.
Maybe Willy can "put his mouth where his song is", and show everyone how it is done?
This is what Martie Maguire, one of the sisters in the Dixie Chicks, said:
"I'd rather have a small following of really cool people who get it, who will grow with us as we grow and are fans for life, than people that have us in their five-disc changer with Reba McEntire and Toby Keith," Maguire said. "We don't want those kinds of fans. They limit what you can do."
Nasty, huh? And stupid. From what I've heard and read over the years, Reba is almost universally loved, by both fans and fellow country singers. I have no idea why the Chicks felt compelled to trash her. Except that maybe they felt it would gain them a larger audience with bigoted anti-country pop fans.
I love the "really cool people" part. Is Maguire twelve?
"BTW, I heard some of the Album on Imus this morning."
@nus seems intent on hawking their album. I hope there will be a backlash where people stop listening and buying his worthless cleaning products that are nothing but soap and water. Personally I turn his show off whenever he plays their songs.
You mean like having your own TV show?
I can think of some coastal states that they can go to, and they are not Gulf Coast states either.
Who are the Dixie Chicks?
