Conklin: Wiener wish in Spanish is OK [Oscar Mayer jingle contest]
Wisconsin State Journal ^ | May 20, 2006 | MELANIE CONKLIN

From its Madison headquarters, Oscar Mayer recently sent a press release nationwide seeking fans to sing its hot dog jingle "and be a star!" Five winners will get to appear in a commercial, and entering is easy, relatively: Just send a one-minute videotape of yourself singing the Oscar Mayer wiener jingle - in English or Spanish.

Spanish? The hot dog is a revered American symbol, and the jingle is probably recognized as widely as, say, the national anthem. And as we all learned recently, President Bush doesn't like the national anthem being sung in Spanish.

Asked about Adam Kidron's Spanish- language version of the anthem at an April 28 press briefing, Bush said, "I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English."

So how does the president feel about the Oscar Mayer wiener song being sung in Spanish? I decided to ask the White House press office. There's no obvious number or e-mail address for media calls on its Web site. But it is worth noting that there's a button to hit to contact the White House "en Espanol."

Waiting for the Senate to figure a way to make hot dog jingles in Spanish part of their insanity.

Ridicule can be an effective tool but MSM participation is, sadly, required.

Spanish?? The Oscar Mayer wiener song in SPANISH???

Oh, deseo que era una salchicha de Francfort de Oscar-Mayer
eso es lo que quisiera verdad que fuera.
La causa si fuera una salchicha de Francfort de Oscar-Mayer,
cada una estaría en amor con mí.
I don't think so...

This nonsense is getting to be too much. Forget a law making English our 'official' National Language. I think we need a law to OUTLAW freaking Spanish - period!

Press 1 for English, press 2 to get deported.

Someone should send in a jingle in Latin. You know, the dead language, which the company is to me after this. Just adding it to my boycott list.

Since we live in an area overrun by illegals, I have noticed more and more commercials on here in Spanish. And these are the regular channels, not the Mexican channels.

Same here. I can't go anywhere without being assaulted by Spanish. When Jack in the Box started airing Spanish commericals last year, I boycotted them. McDonald's jumped on the Mexican bandwagon about that time by putting up Spanish menus IN FRONT of the English ones, but they soon got the word and took them down.

But now the only two grocery stores within an hour of us have everything in Spanish too. What to do??? Last weekend at Walmart, even the canned goods were in Spanish. Good thing they have pictures on them. I'm talking the regular foods and cleaning supplies (Hoover carpet cleaner is now on my boycott list for being in Spanish), not those in the "specialty" aisles. I was checking out the recipe cards in the produce section and they too were in Spanish. How the heck am I supposed to try a new veggie without being able to read the freakin' recipe cards??? I was so mad, I grabbed my red pen and wrote "ENGLISH!" on a bunch of them and told the manager off. When I got to the check out, the couple in front of me were complaining the credit card machine was also in Spanish!!!

Then, yesterday I was filling up with gas at the HEB (our other grocery) and glanced up at the weekly grocery sales sign above the pump. It was in !@#^$#^# Spanish, too!

What, Latinos can't sing jingles about that tasty hodgepodge of discarded meat byproducts?
