Google goes free-range

Google, whose founders reportedly drive Prius gas-electric cars and have invested in alternative energy, is now taking a stand for animal rights.

The company will announce that its cafeterias will serve only eggs from cage-free hens, according to an article in the San Jose Mercury News on Thursday. That's no small matter; the company serves about 300,000 eggs a year to about 6,000 employees a year, the article said.

"Animal rights groups urged the switch, noting that at many large farms, six or more hens are confined in a single wire cage," the newspaper reported. "For 12 to 18 months they cannot flap their wings or forage for food, and egg industry guidelines require only 67 square inches of space for each bird to live out its life--an area two-thirds the size of a sheet of notebook paper."

The company's global food services manager says he hopes Google's move will encourage others to act to ensure humane treatment of animals. However, Google does occasionally buy veal, he says.

Google is in good company. A company that manages cafeterias for Yahoo, Oracle and Cisco announced late last year it would buy eggs only from cage-free hens and America Online followed suit last month, the article said.

This story apparently passed unnoticed. WCBS in NY is trying to resurrect it, just to make sure the target demographic gets it, I suppose.

File this under vain, idiotic, corporate "activism." Which is something that corporations oughtn't waste resources on.

One more reason to distrust these kids.

Big deal. This is between Google and their shareholders.

They should worry about their health plan if they're serving that much cholesterol. :-)

Really. Just wait until that cause comes back into vogue and insurance companies start doing a little activism of their own. Could present 'em with a conflict of interest.

But not for human rights.

Exactly. And why should eating free range poulty make one a "tree-hugging" liberal? I'd rather consume meat and dairy from healthy animals eating a natural diet than from miserable, hormone-ingested factory livestock. And I'm willing to pay a little extra to do so.

Doesn't make me a bleeding-heart liberal. Now if Google banned meat and dairy from their cafeteria in accordance with PETA's wishes, I'd be a little more upset.

How about their priorities??? Let's see....

* Chickens in cages: turn 'em loose

* Chinese citizens loose [accessing unauthorized web sites from China]: put them in cages.

exactly. not only is it hypocritical, corporate activism puts an elephant in the moral marketplace. apparently we have a couple of believers with us, though.

so, when your sitting there eating your Mickey D's chick sandwich, you're actually thinking about the life of the animal you're eating?

Of course, that's your privilege, but...

No, I don't. And the couple-three times a month that I enjoy some greasy McDonald's, I'm willing suspend my desire for free-range, organic this and that. Like I said, I'd rather consume meat from free-range animals. Doesn't mean it is my Gospel.

I also prefer products that are sweetened with cane sugar rather than high-fructose corn syrup. Sometimes the alternative is unavoidable.

OK, I'm lost on this one. But for the record, I drive a 4-cylinder pickup truck. It gets me where I need to go.

My hubby works for Google, though not in Mountain Home. However, on his trips there, he said they feed people very, very well there. Not only food in the cafeteria, but in other buildings too. They don't have to pay for any of it.

Yes, I've read that the food served at Google for free is one of the excellent perks of working there.

I get pretty good food where I work (the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN-69) but it comes out of my BAS allowance!
