The British Invasion

I was rather lucky to have grown up in one of the most amazing periods in the history of modern music, what has become known as the “British Invasion”. It wasn’t really an invasion of the U.S. by an armed force from another country; rather it was an invasion of our music charts by British recording artists. I was in the eighth grade when I first heard “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You” by the Beatles. Prior to 1964 the British had only two hit records that topped the U.S. charts. Those were “Stranger on the Shore” by Acker Bilk and “Telstar” by the Tornadoes, both in 1962.

In 1964 Ed Sullivan, the host of the hugely popular “Ed Sullivan Show” was at a New York airport when the Beatles landed from England to go on their first U.S. tour. Crowds of screaming young girls greeted the Beatles and Ed was curious as to what the commotion was all about. He met with the Beatles on the spot and offered them $50,000 to appear on his show. The Beatles agreed and the British Invasion was officially underway. On February 9, 1964, the largest audience in the history of American television watched the Beatles perform live on the Ed Sullivan show. I was one of them.

For some years prior to 1964 young British musicians had idolized American music stars and many of the Americans were more popular in Britain than they were at home. The young Brits listened to Buddy Holly, Leadbelly, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, the Everly Brothers, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and many others. The U.S. musicians became like Gods to the young British musicians and they worked hard to emulate them.

The Animals (Eric Burdon), The Beatles, Chad and Jeremy, The Dave Clark Five, Freddy and the Dreamers, Herman’s Hermits, The Kinks (Ray Davies), Donovan, The Hollies (Graham Nash), The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards), Billy J. Kramer and the Dakota’s, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, Dusty Springfield, The Troggs, The Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Peter and Gordon, The Honeycombs, Manfred Mann, The Yardbirds (Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton), The Zombies, The Moody Blues, The Walker Brothers, Petula Clark, The Move, The Small Faces (Rod Stewart), The Who (Pete Townshend, Roger Daltry), Argent, John Mayall’s Blues breakers (Eric Clapton, Peter Green), Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green), Cream (Eric Clapton), Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson), Procol Harum (Robin Trower), Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page, Robert Plant), Traffic (Dave Mason, Stevie Winwood), Deep Purple and The Spencer Davis Group (Stevie Winwood).

Hard to make that one into a knock knock joke, though.

Bedtime for Phil. I know it's painful, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Good night!

Very painful indeed!!

Hubby is over here on the couch sawing some serious wood (wish it were Scary Tree).

Probably time for me to hit the hay too and roll hubby off the couch and into the bed.

Night!

I think that lads are starting to get more interested in fashion than ever before.

In fact when you get a fellow that is they seem to be even more particular than us girls. Must be this label, must be just so etc etc.

As I have a paid photobucket account so monthly bandwidth restrictions are not a problem I nearly always down load the image to that first.

Then you did not hit bandwidth restrictions and some sites even do not like you to link. A friend of mine got her knuckles rapped the other day for linking a photo and using the site's limited bandwidth.

I see it! cute graphic! strange how computers are so different. Often even with a gig of RAM I need to reboot as I do so much with graphics.

Hope the tortolinni was good. I love it & make it often.. with either an olive oil/garlic sauce, pesto or marinara..

good info thanks. I know the mysteries of the computer are mostly due to lack of knowledge of idiosyncrasies..

I got "smacked" a few times in early thread posting. The pix disappeared within a few hours. I now put all on my server that go on threads that I post. Live & learn.

for regular posts I often just grab 'whatever' I find on line.. There are two obvious NO LINK sites.. we all get burned with them the first time.

Have fun today at the talk show thread. I leave in a bit for church. My friend Patty is going with me. She is single (never married) and a friend since we were 12. She was in my wedding party & we were both dancers (professional) growing up. Now both are into animals(rescue), love movies, vegetarians & outdoors enthusiasts. Both of us have spent a significant part of our lives caring for elderly parents.(her dad is 96!!!) . After church & Sunday School we will take dog walk on golf course (and might get to walk on paths as it is raining!.. and then dinner out.

As summer approaches in the northern hemisphere, it's important we take a look at one of our most important and valued rituals.

After the long months of cold and winter weather, we will soon be coming up to summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking as it's the only type of cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.

When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:

Routine...

1) The woman buys the food.
2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.
3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.

Here comes the important part:

4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.

More routine....

5) The woman goes inside to organize the plates and cutlery.
6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with this dangerous situation.

Important again:

7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

More routine.....

8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table.
9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all:

10) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed "her night off." And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women.

FM radio is such short range, but sounds better.

It wasn't until the late 60's that FM radio started playing rock and roll.

FM csn go fairly far if the terrain is flat plus there could be weather conditions as well. I've heard some old clips of KQV-FM which became WDVE and back then, KQV-FM either simulcast what was on KQV-AM or they broadcasted to a more underground audience. I heard a clip from one night in 1968 where (now) KDKA newsman, Bob Koppler, signed off KQV-FM at night. I think it was kind of dumb in a way, I know KQV-AM changes it's signal pattern towards the southeast at night so even here in Moon Township, they get weaker. KQV-FM would have been a erfect way to keep people listening. However, I don't know if KQV-AM did that in the 1960's or not plus FM wasn't as common as it is now.

It's kind on interesting how FM talk has sprung up and I'm glad too, us dungeonbound listeners can at least get FM whereas AM is nothing but static and loud buzzes.

Keith Richards looks like he died back in about 1980 and nobody told him about it...

It's probably all the drugs that is keeping him alive and pickled. B-)
