The British Invasion

I was rather lucky to have grown up in one of the most amazing periods in the history of modern music, what has become known as the “British Invasion”. It wasn’t really an invasion of the U.S. by an armed force from another country; rather it was an invasion of our music charts by British recording artists. I was in the eighth grade when I first heard “I Want to Hold Your Hand” and “She Loves You” by the Beatles. Prior to 1964 the British had only two hit records that topped the U.S. charts. Those were “Stranger on the Shore” by Acker Bilk and “Telstar” by the Tornadoes, both in 1962.

In 1964 Ed Sullivan, the host of the hugely popular “Ed Sullivan Show” was at a New York airport when the Beatles landed from England to go on their first U.S. tour. Crowds of screaming young girls greeted the Beatles and Ed was curious as to what the commotion was all about. He met with the Beatles on the spot and offered them $50,000 to appear on his show. The Beatles agreed and the British Invasion was officially underway. On February 9, 1964, the largest audience in the history of American television watched the Beatles perform live on the Ed Sullivan show. I was one of them.

For some years prior to 1964 young British musicians had idolized American music stars and many of the Americans were more popular in Britain than they were at home. The young Brits listened to Buddy Holly, Leadbelly, Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, the Everly Brothers, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and many others. The U.S. musicians became like Gods to the young British musicians and they worked hard to emulate them.

The Animals (Eric Burdon), The Beatles, Chad and Jeremy, The Dave Clark Five, Freddy and the Dreamers, Herman’s Hermits, The Kinks (Ray Davies), Donovan, The Hollies (Graham Nash), The Rolling Stones (Mick Jagger and Keith Richards), Billy J. Kramer and the Dakota’s, Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders, Dusty Springfield, The Troggs, The Searchers, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Peter and Gordon, The Honeycombs, Manfred Mann, The Yardbirds (Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton), The Zombies, The Moody Blues, The Walker Brothers, Petula Clark, The Move, The Small Faces (Rod Stewart), The Who (Pete Townshend, Roger Daltry), Argent, John Mayall’s Blues breakers (Eric Clapton, Peter Green), Fleetwood Mac (Peter Green), Cream (Eric Clapton), Jethro Tull (Ian Anderson), Procol Harum (Robin Trower), Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page, Robert Plant), Traffic (Dave Mason, Stevie Winwood), Deep Purple and The Spencer Davis Group (Stevie Winwood).

At first I felt that but soon realised that it was nice to come home from work without my clothes smelling of smoke unless I spent too much time near the drinks machines which is the smoking area.

As now the workshop (factory is smoke free) they smoke outside and office staff that do smoke has a quick smoke at the drinks machine.

There are only 2 or 3 employees who smoke at work and the main one is the boss and he is away on business a lot so really it is now a smoke free zone inside the building.

Next year when our laws go in line with Scotland even the area around the coffee machine will dissapear and they will have to smoke outside.

To look at she is IMHO the spitting image of her mother.

I always think that Liz looks like Dick and Mary like Lynne. Personality wise I suspect it is the other way round with Liz being the more outgoing and Mary the more quiet thoughtful type. (I bet she had her dad's sense of humour and probably his twinkle as well).

Mary with her parents in 2000, you can see the resemblance of Mary to Lynne here

Good Pix Snugs.. and Hello there friend! I just read the entire(well scanned) singles thread. Got home very late from Cav's game .. not a celebration for sure.. but a NICE outing & the electricity in the arena was super intense. These scores are more like college/high school than pro. Just good defense I guess (and a LOT of mistakes)

GREAT job on thread Supernatural!!!!

You have it packed with wonderful information, great pix & great music. You are a natural & I am very impressed with your music knowledge.

I recall the song Hey Jude. It came out my first year of teaching school. As I recall there was a long & regular version of it. the kids at the dances LOVED the long version. It was the song you grabbed tight your partner & moved slowly with the rhythm. The never-ending Hey Jude, na, ney na, nas.. were magic for them. It seemed at that time to be a very erotic type mood setter

The album cover I recall was John & Yoko nude on a cover. I recall my husband's grandmother making a big stink about it.. and she was doing it before I had even heard/seen it. you did a great job with the HTML. I am very impressed. Thank you FRiend!
