DURHAM, N.C.One of three Duke University lacrosse players charged with rape wants the case resolved in time for the next school year, his lawyer said in court yesterday. But the judge warned he will not fast-track the proceedings.
The case "is not going to jump ahead of the line and be handled any differently," Superior Court Judge Ronald L. Stephens said at a hearing for sophomore Reade Seligmann.
After the brief hearing, District Attorney Mike Nifong said he does not expect any trial to begin before next year.

I personally am not struck by any resemblance. Is Elmira a known relative or is this a long shot in the dark?
BTW - Look at that resume'. Who says a black woman can't "better herself" (to borrow a phrase) in this country. There but for a whole series of bad decisions goes Crystal or Kim

Resemblance is there -- but such a difference in noses. (I love the mother's strong nose, I think it's a beautiful nose). But then, I'm the crazy one who worked like mad to talk a girlfriend out of a nose job; she had a classic Lithuanian beak. It was so unique. She got the nose job... I understood, but it really was a classic nose.)

I see a resemblance in face/bone structure/shape. Definitely not the nose.

Thank you. Where I see the resemblance is the lower right Elmira and Mama. Wish I could get a close-up on Elmira's ears.

I think the connection is not so much blood DNA as an historical connection.
John Chavis was a free black, educated at Princeton. He came South and taught children, black and white. He was a member of the Presbytery. He taught the children of the long dead Willie Mangum.
He died in 1838.
Benjamin Franklin Chavis is his great-(maybe 2nd great-)grandson. Born in Oxford, NC. His parents are said to be activists. He is said to have joined the NAACP at 12.
Scandal in not new to him.
As stated earlier, he was one of the Wilmington 10. He spoke at a commemoration of the Greensboro Massacre in 1980:
"I want to send a message to Jimmy Carter. There ain't going to be no reinstatement of the draft. We 're not going to fight no more wars for capitalism; we 're not going to fight no more wars for imperialism. We 're going to be drafted into the freedom struggle. We're going to march; we 're going to march! We 're going to tear this system down! We must blot out capitalism and imperialism once and for all!"
He coined the term environmental racism [environmentalist = socialist]
He is about as militant as they come.
He is President & CEO if HSAN
http://www.hsan.org What We Want
1. We want freedom and the social, political and economic development and empowerment of our families and communities; and for all women, men and children throughout the world.
2. We want equal justice for all without discrimination based on race, color, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, age, creed or class.
3. We want the total elimination of poverty.
4. We want the highest quality public education equally for all.
5. We want the total elimination of racism and racial profiling, violence, hatred and bigotry.
6. We want universal access and delivery of the highest quality health care for all.
7. We want the total elimination of police brutality and the unjust incarceration of people of color and all others.
8. We want the end and repeal of all repressive legislations, laws, regulations and ordinances such as three strikes laws; federal and state mandatory minimum sentencing; trying and sentencing juveniles as adults; sentencing disparities between crack and powdered cocaine use; capitol punishment; the Media Marketing Accountability Act; and hip-hop censorship fines by the FCC.
9. We want reparations to help repair the lingering vestiges; damages and suffering of African Americans as a result of the brutal enslavement of generations of Africans in America.
10. We want the progressive transformation of American society into a Nu America as a result of organizing and mobilizing the energy, activism and resources of the hip-hop community at the grassroots level throughout the United States.
11. We want greater unity, mutual dialogue, program development and a prioritizing of national issues for collective action within the hip-hop community through summits, conferences, workshops, issue task force and joint projects.
12. We want advocacy of public policies that are in the interests of hip-hop before Congress, state legislatures, municipal governments, the media and the entertainment industry.
13. We want the recertification and restoration of voting rights for the 10 million persons who have loss their right to vote as a result of a felony conviction. Although these persons have served time in prison, their voting rights have not been restored in 40 states in the U.S.
14. We want to tremendously increase public awareness and education on the pandemic of HIV/AIDS.
15. We want a clean environment and an end to communities in which poor and minorities reside being deliberately targeted for toxic waste dumps, facilities and other environmental hazards.
The bottom line is this is socialism to the nth degree. Chavis wants to take from the haves & give to the have nots. And as we have seen, Durham is the best example of a city with such a divide.
As I said before, the NBP did not just show up and Nifong said "Come on in..glad you could visit."
Why Durham? Why not? It was the perfect sequenjce of events for someone with his agenda.
I am not saying this is the end result of a long, ivolved super secret plan, but I would bet he is pulling many of the strings.
It's not about rape. It is about power.

Dukie07 -
I'm glad you like the book. Race relations in the south are not always as some would have had you believe. I read a biography of Jefferson Davis where it described his pre-war relationship with his overseer (effectively a plantation business manager) who was a black man who could read, write, and do accounting. That cuts against stereotype in more than a few ways doesn't it?

Didn't I originally recommend the book to you? Did you have a chance to look at it yet? Maybe Dukie07 will sell you her copy when she's done.
To: TexKat
Shouldn't you be putting up a picture of the father, Travis?
To: TexKat
So again I ask. Is this a known relative and if so what is the relation?
To: Alia
The picture of Elmira standing with the group of people is the one that most favors Mary Cheek.

Not a link, Alia, but rather a book which I purchased at the Gothic Book Store at Duke. I believe it is available for purchase online. Author is Robert F. Durden. If you'd like, or cannot afford or locate a copy, I'd be happy to send to you when I'm finished with it. FR mail me.
Did a google based on TexKat's suggestion: Here's an interesting site: http://lashawnbarber.com/archives/2006/04/21/duke-rape-case/

Don't know what the relation is yet. But I have been searching now for 3 weeks or more. I just ran across Elmira's picture again and bingo it reminded me of Mary Cheek's picture from a couple of nights ago when another Freeper had posted it.

How thoughtful of you! :) I'll drive to Duke and pick one up (I'd like to assess the "campi" environment so I'll budget a day soon to do this.). All my digging, from the get-go, has shown me repeatedly how fair the Duke family has been. It's why I keep poking around the edges of this "case".

It is about power, I agree.
Ben Chavis is president and owner of a hip-hop organization??? (Oh yes, that's covered in his "non-negotiable list of demands" (in your post) -- as items #8 and #10.
As I said before, the NBP did not just show up and Nifong said "Come on in..glad you could visit."
I've dug up a number of Black Panther events at Duke...
Why Durham? Why not? It was the perfect sequenjce of events for someone with his agenda. I am not saying this is the end result of a long, ivolved super secret plan, but I would bet he is pulling many of the strings.
I'm slogging through corporations, financials and articles... these, in and of itself, tell quite the story. I concur -- Durham/Duke is being used as a lightning rod for "political" purposes by a number of alliances.
On that list: "7. We want the total elimination of police brutality and the unjust incarceration of people of color and all others. "
A lot in Durham have criminal records -- why wasn't Chavis there all these past years TRYING TO CHANGE THE NC LAW ON "RIGHT TO SPEEDY TRIALS"? eh? eh?????
It's not about rape. It is about power.
Raw power, unrestrained judicial activism. Yep. It's not about rape; it's about something which can appear quite complicated and involves other nations, as well as the little town of Durham...

Thank you most kindly. As I "hazardously" posted during the first few days of this "situation" in Durham, I come from the West -- California, San Francisco. What I have learned since arriving here defies every single lying POS stereotype being perpetrated through "education" and "politics" and "MSM" in the west. I'm drinking it all up. Now, so many more things make sense to me. It makes me also understand more comprehensively the crap "endured" in SF, and the larger picture.
We been done lied to about the South.
