DURHAM, N.C.One of three Duke University lacrosse players charged with rape wants the case resolved in time for the next school year, his lawyer said in court yesterday. But the judge warned he will not fast-track the proceedings.
The case "is not going to jump ahead of the line and be handled any differently," Superior Court Judge Ronald L. Stephens said at a hearing for sophomore Reade Seligmann.
After the brief hearing, District Attorney Mike Nifong said he does not expect any trial to begin before next year.

I almost attended Duke. The only thing that kept me out were my grades, my SAT scores, and I could point to no leadership qualities or other nonacademic excellence.
How else does one make the supporters of Nifong feel the consequences of their blind support?

Well, no matter how powerful or tightknit the Durham establishment is, they don't know who they are screwing with. The Framed are not just rich or previledged, but they are POWERFUL, nationally powerful, and powerful beyond party lines. The defense has at its head two symbols: the Republican-affiliated chairwoman of the LPGA (Rae Evans) and Bob Bennett.
Durham is a podunky town.
I don't envy this crime cabal.
the judges statements were typical stuff. you can't read anything into it.
I hope you are right, but I see no evidence of "coerced objectivity" to this point.
marking my place.
What if two of them weren't even there when the name calling was going on?
We know that the name calling went both ways anyway.
Perhaps to see if the records match?
That was long before we had so many court cases. Next year may be as speedy as it gets.
I think a case could be made about the racial tensions and the need to get the case to trial faster for the good of the community.
I believe they borrowed their bail money.
They likely don't actually have 6 figures to reward these witches with.
What makes you think the "ladies" will settle anyway?
These "ladies" are going to go for a lot more than 6 figures from the boys, imo.
A settlement will look horrible in this case. It might work in other cases, but I believe it would be a disaster in this case. The boys will be branded forever if they even attempt to settle, I think.
We can only hope. I think he's feeling pretty secure right now but a lot could change between now & then.
As far as I know, the DA must turn over whatever came up in his investigations, no matter which side it benefits.
NiFong probably hasn't read the SANE report yet.....
Yes! Nifong is a liar. He KNEW no condoms were used unless his victim was lying. He also MUST have known from the first DNA results that semen from a non lacrosse player was inside her. He did not disclose that first time around. Please tell me someone in NC can stop this freight train!
"I would not be surprised if condoms were used," Nifong said in an interview last month. "Probably an exotic dancer would not be your first choice for unprotected sex."

Nifong is such a rotten guy......
Unless he finds a sudden need to "spend more time with his family", Mike "little engine that could" Nifong will keep chugging along. The governor who appointed him interim DA won't give him the axe, nor the AG who may run for governor one day and will need the black vote.
Those in Durham who elected Nifong would be outraged if this case is shortcircuited by outsiders. The only thing that will stop it is for the accuser to back out, or for Nifong to say he was duped by her and drop the case.
I'm sorry, don't know the answer about tuition for illegals. I was wondering about reduced (subsidised) tuition for children of employees. Since so many of Durham's working folks work at Duke, I would think that might be a community friendly policy ... Not sure how to work the admisssion policy, though.
Well the team members did have possession of it for two days until the DPD decided to show up.
Interestingly enough, the Raleigh News and Observer claims that we don't know that the name calling went both ways. See my exchange with Executive Editor Melanie Sill on her blog...
