As far as I know, the DA must turn over whatever came up in his investigations, no matter which side it benefits.

Yeah but the key is that since the defense doesn't actually know what he has, he can suppress evidence favorable to the defense and not have anyone be able to call him on it. Convicted people get out of jail all the time when it turns out the prosecutor or police have suppressed evidence.
