(BREAKING) Girl Stabbed To Death Outside S.C. Middle School

(AP) CONWAY, S.C. An 18-year-old woman was stabbed to death in a middle school parking lot as students were arriving for class Thursday, and a man was arrested, police said.

Students and school employees saw the attack shortly before 8 a.m. in a lot shared by Carolina Forest Middle School and Carolina Forest High School, Horry County police said in a news release.

The victim's name was not released, and authorities would not say whether she was a student at the high school.

Edwin Lee Cornelius, 24, of Aynor, was arrested shortly after the stabbing. Police said charges were pending.

Both schools were locked down, though classes remained in session.

"People just sat in their car and waited and when you saw the ambulances, and fire trucks and police cars going on you knew something was going on," said Jill Watts, 49, who has a child at Conway High School and works at an electric company near the school.

Calls to the school rang unanswered Thursday. An administrative assistant at the Horry County school district referred all questions to police, who did not immediately return phone calls.

The woman died at Conway Medical Center, Horry County Deputy Coroner Dan Bellamy told WBTW-TV of Florence. Conway is about 15 miles from Myrtle Beach.

Headline/story disconnect. Was she a girl at the middle school or an 18 year old woman.

---What is it about the middle name "Lee" down South?---

That would be about Robert E. Lee, son.

Horrible incident. Prayers being sent.

Of course, I'm sure the media will now start clamoring for a ban on "assault" knives such as the one used in this murder. Only knives with rounded edges will escape the federal ban.

Yeah, it's almost like they're naming their kids after a historical hero of the South or something.

A very gentle Southern lady was driving across a Bridge in South Carolina one day. As she neared the top of the bridge, she noticed a young man ready to jump.

She stopped her car, rolled down the window and said, "Please don't jump, think of your dear mother and father."

He replied, "Mom and Dad are both dead; I'm going to jump."

She said, "Well, think of your wife and children."

He replied, "I'm not married and I don't have any kids."

She said, "Well, think of Robert E. Lee."

He replied, "Who's Robert E. Lee?''

She replied, "Well bless your heart, just go ahead and jump."

One in custody following Carolina Forest Middle School slaying

Thursday, May 18, 2006 - 09:15 AM
CONWAY, S.C. -- Horry County officials have charged an Aynor man in the stabbing death of a woman on the campus of Carolina Forest Middle School earlier this morning.

Natalia Allison Holmes, 18, was identified by Horry County Coroner Robert Edge as the victim. She was a student at Carolina Forest High School.

Edwin Lee Cornelius, 24, Aynor, was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Paul Butler with Horry County Sheriff's Department says Cornelius has been charged with murder.

"Patrol and School Resource Officers were able to quickly respond; however the suspect had already fled the scene. The assault was witnessed by a number of school staff and students," the release states.

Holmes was pronounced dead at Conway Medical Center "due to one or more stab wounds," according to the release.

The incident took place in the school's front parking lot about 7:50 a.m. as students arrived for class, Horry County Police Department spokesman Bob Carr said.

He said the school's resource officer initially responded and secured the scene until other officers could arrive.

Both Carolina Forest Middle School and Carolina Forest High School were put on lockdown.

Gates to the school were opened around 10 a.m. to allow parents in to get their children if they wanted, WBTW News13 reported. Video from the scene showed a steady stream of cars onto the campus.

WBTW News13 reported school officials intend for the campus to return to normal operations this afternoon and remain so Friday.

Stay tuned to WBTW News13 at throughout the afternoon and tonight at 5 and 6 for continuing coverage of this event.

More info on this. This guy was not a stranger to the criminal justice system. From the article:

Thursday's arrest is not the first contact for Cornelius with police, according to court records and officials. Cornelius was arrested in Oct. 25, 2005, on a first-offense criminal domestic violence charge that involved a Conway woman, who was listed on the police report as being his live-in girlfriend.

In that incident, the 21-year-old woman told police Cornelius reached under a blanket and pulled out a handgun and threatened to shoot her if she ran. Cornelius was found guilty of that charge and forfeited a $500 cash bond in the case on Nov. 10, 2005, Deputy Solicitor Fran Humphries said.

In June 2000, Cornelius was charged with kidnapping, grand larceny of $5,000 or more and assault with intent to kill, but those charges were dismissed in 2002 at the request of the victim, who was his grandmother, Humphries said.

Manslaughter charges were also dropped against Cornelius in September 2004 after the shooting death of 34-year-old Enrico A. Faulk of Aynor was ruled self-defense. Cornelius had been charged with voluntary manslaughter after shooting Faulk to death early Jan. 27, 2003. Faulk had entered his house armed with a knife.

Thanks for the ping. Sickening isn't it. We just had three boys here in the Charleston area decide to beat up the last girl out of the lunchroom, I believe that was on Wednesday. They were let back into school the following day.

The reason? They had to take the PAC test. If they hadn't those three boys would have affected the score and the federal dollars (that part from a school teacher friend).
