A pulpy page-turner in its original incarnation as a huge international bestseller has become a stodgy, grim thing in the exceedingly literal-minded film version of "The Da Vinci Code." Tackling head-on novelist Dan Brown's controversy-stirring thriller hinging on a subversively revisionist view of Jesus Christ's life, director Ron Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman have conspired to drain any sense of fun out of the melodrama, leaving expectant audiences with an oppressively talky film that isn't exactly dull, but comes as close to it as one could imagine with such provocative material; result is perhaps the best thing the project's critics could have hoped for.

Book publishers don't even read that many pages and make conclusions. I'm surprised the poster stuck it out that long.
The book is long and too much dialogue and details, even for me. I felt many of them were unnecessary.

Why's that?
"Robert was very scared." might make for an interesting sentence in a novel intended for third graders or those for whom English is a second language, but for an adult with an intellect that matches his age, it's a big bore. It's cartoonish without the fun of an anvil landing on somebody's head.
There are millions of people who are entertained by this literary junk food. Those people are not very bright. They cry while watching Oprah. They think Celine Dion could sing opera. They ask the museum curator where the Thomas Kincaids are hanging.
Tom, (I can call you 'Tom' can't I?) you might want to engage a spellcheck before you start insulting other people here.
It will add greatly to your credibility. Otherwise, one might be led to think that you are engaging in a battle of wits unarmed. ;-)

I'm sorry, but if I don't like the quality of the writing in a book, I can't get past it. I just feel like my time would be better spent reading something written by a writer who is skilled at his craft.
This really only applies to novels, which I tend to read with the intention of being impressed by the craft and skill of the storyteller. If I'm reading an autobiography or something, I can concentrate more on the story being told than on the manner in which it is written.

I hope you enjoy the movie. A trashy book can make a fun trashy movie, if done correctly. I really like Ron Howard as a director, and Tom Hanks is usually OK. The reviews have not been promising though. I’ll catch it on cable in a couple of months.

The new benchmark of crap?This one has the potential to rank (and, boy, is that word apropos) with Gigli, Battlefield: Earth, Batman and Robin, and other truly legendary fiascoes.
Man o man, the critics who have seen it @ Canne's certainly haven't been nice to this movie.... I've been using Gigli's 7% as my benchmark for a truely horribly bad movie, I wouldn't have expected this movie to be the one to make me use a different benchmark!
