A republican senator proposed a bill that will prohibit the granting of legal status, or adjustment of current status, to any individual who enters or entered the United States in violation of Federal law unless the border security measures are put up front. I9n other words: secure the borders first! The bill failed passage in a 55-40 vote. The Republicans that voted against this measure along side 36 Democrats and one Independent are as follows: Bennett (UT) Brownback (R-KS), Chafee (RI), Coleman (MN), Collins (ME), Craig (ID), DeWine (OH), Graham (SC), Hagel (NE), Lugar (IN), Martinez (FL), Murkowski (AK), Shelby (AL), Snow (ME),Specter (PA), Stevens (AK), Voinovich (OH), Warner (VA)
Thank you very much for your response. I appreciate in the information. I will admit this has only become a key issue to me in the last couple of years, as I live close to Denver and have seen it from the problems illegal aliens have caused for that city and Colorado in general.
Keep up the good work.
"The senate really isn't listening to the people."
Neither is the President.
Your web page trumpets praise for securing the border. You just voted against an amendment that requires securing the border before granting any adjustment of legal status of any individual who has entered the United States in violation of federal law. Senator Crapo voted for the measure. Why are you siding with the pro-illegal Democrats on this issue?
I'm not surprised the aides in the office were clueless.
Craig has been pretty good about returning a reply to me in postal mail in the past.
Ohio's senators betrayed us again.
I have done my share of criticising the president but I would offer to you that his speech demonstrates that he is indeed listening to both sides of people in this debate.
I may personally disagree with him on this issue but he is doing what he feels is right, and that is representing the entirety of the people in this nation, Legally or not.
I wouldn't say he is not listening to the people, at most I would say that he is listening to too many!
It will be interesting to see what come out of committee soon.
Here in Illinois at least I know how both Senators here will come down on votes like this! UGH!!!!!
The President gave a good speech and put forward good proposals. I would have liked more NG, more concrete steps on building a wall, etc etc but it's a good start. Those at the extreme left and right will join hands and trash him but what else is new? We need a workable plan that will pass Congress. The real battleground is in Congress not the WH. This requires increased pressure on the Congresscritters.
Who were the 7 democrats who voted yes?
The man is just too out of touch, but Hoosiers will vote for him again and again and again and again.........Change here is the enemy.
Exactly. I'd like someone to name me one other president who has dealt with illegal immigration. The answer: None.
I'm glad the bill was defeated, because it was not a comprehensive solution. We don't need several new laws, we need comprehensive legislation, as Bush said last night. Of course, the media and some Democrats want to make it sound as if Republicans are against tough border security, which is nonsense.
I imagine part of it has to do with not losing the Hispanic vote.
I disagree.
I listened carefully to what the President said, and considered the full import of his plan. He has not moved an inch.
6 years ago, he wanted guest workers and some sort of amnesty. Now he doesn't call it "amnesty", in fact he says it's "not amnesty", because he has listened enough to know that people don't want that. But it is.
6 years ago, he thought that walling the border, or militarizing it, were impracticable. Last night he said that the US is NOT militarizing the border, and called for a "virtual fence", as opposed to a real barrier. Border conservatives were calling for a cheap and effective real barrier. Bush carefully avoided giving them anything they said they wanted, while using words that showed he listened enough. He said "No Fence" while trying to sound like he said "We're putting up a Fence."
The Border Conservatives said they wanted border security FIRST. The President said no. He proposed only amnesty with no fence.
The Border Conservatives said they wanted heavy enforcement and employer penalties within the US. Bush said he was going to create guest workers, which effectively allows employers to hire cheap aliens at cheap alien rates without even being illegal.
His speech demonstrated that he knew he was in trouble with the conservatives, and so he tried to sell them his same ideas as before, which they rejected before, packaged up in the mantra of new words aimed at making it sounding like he was compromising. His "compromise" amounted to: "Do what I'vE always said, but we'll do it using your words so you think you've won."
I don't think he saved his Border Conservative base last night. I think he alienated them.
I think you have to go back to Dwight Eisenhour to find one. :-)
Republicans Vote Against Secure-First Approach.
Why did McCain not vote? Is he dodging the issue?
The bill was against the Presidents position. The Democrats voted in support of the President position. I assume you join in with the Democrats and the President against border security?
Bush himself has come to terms with the fact that like everyone else, he will not get this to come out entirely the way he wants it.
There will be more enforcement than he wants, there will be more of a physical barrier than he wants and there will be less legalization than he wants.
The President cannot make law. No WAY will he veto a reform bill that contains one. Even if it is not the complete east to west that many people demand.
W wants to and has done some great leading on alot of issues. On this one , as he stated last night, he has to wait on Congress because it will take the almighty dollar appropriation to accomplish ANYTHING.
Last night he did duch anchor babies and actual penalties but again, I caution you to the fact that he really has no control over forming that policy, that has to be done by congress.
Time will tell.
Wow, CNN! REALLY?
I'm so sick of Mccain and his his lackey from South Carolina..I really hope we don't let them get through the primaries.....
George Allen was great on Hannity and Colmes last night....
