I'm looking for advice, anecdotes, stories of speedy recoveries. I was diagnosed with mono about a month ago, although I may have had it longer. I've had the sickest semester ever: I missed 9 days of classes (instead of the usual one or none...Of course, I was diagnosed with strep throat at the same time as mono, but that was wiped out with the antibiotics.)
I'm writing Freepers because I'm trying to make summer plans, and I know I have to rest, but for how long should I figure on feeling tired and weak? I had to continue working this past month (but I still took it as easy as I could). As the semester winds down, I am more free to rest.
Is there anything else I should be doing except resting (and grading...:)...for a while)? I really want to take my two youngest children on a tour of the southern battlefields for July. Does anyone know if it's a good idea to begin planning that trip, or should I just bag it? [I am also open to trip advice, although I have gotten pages of ideas from another travel web site.]
Any stories and support are welcome. Mono seems to be making a comeback....unfortunately so....
Live like you were dieing.
Listen to your doctor, first and foremost. Mono can run up to 6 months long, during which your internal organs are swollen and at a much higher risk than normal of rupturing. Intense physical activity is not the best idea given these conditions. But me personally, I'd go insane sitting around idly for months on end.
Idle? Hey, there's always freeping. That's got to be okay, right?
Yes, but I agree. I can't sit still all the time, even if I'm on FR.
And I used to really like to exercise, especially in the martial arts....can't do that any more....
One kid I talked to said he was well in two weeks, with mint teas and health alternatives like that. I haven't tried that yet....
It is a great time to start writing that book you were thinking about. Or learning a foreign language, if that is you aren't already a professor of a foreign language. If so, maybe another notch on the language belt...
You could also pick up a new computer skill that might enhance you teaching.

Make your plans, Professor. You should be well on the mend by then. Pay attention to any upper right quadrant pain and take it easy.
Good luck to you... you can only stare at a screen so long.
Hey, it's just Mono.
It coulda been Homo.
I knew people with mono in high school. By the time they returned to school they were the teacher's pet, smart as whips, and very mature. Since you are the teacher, smart, and mature, you will regress into a rebellious state, skip classes, and drive a Pontiac Solstice.
Better still...you probably have tenure.
Louise: George, I can't have sex.
George: With me or in general?
Louise: I went to the doctor today. I have mono.
George: Nucleosis.
Louise: Oh I hope it's not a problem for you.
George: No, no, pff...
Louise: How long is this not gonna be a problem for me?
{ Jerry's apartment...}
Jerry: Six weeks?
George: Yeah, six weeks.
Jerry: Well, so what? you've gone six weeks before.
George: I can do six weeks standin' on my head. I'm a sexual camel. That's not the point. At least there was the possibility.
Jerry: Well, so, are you gonna break up with her?
George: I don't know. I don't wanna be one of those guys.
Jerry: What guys?
George: Like us.
Jerry: Yeah.
Last week I had pneumonia. Although my chest hurt badly it was a nice time to write, surf the internet, play video games, and sleep 5-6 hours a day more. Good luck.
When my husband had double pneumonia, it took months to get better. I guess you were lucky for one week.
Yes, it is fun to relax for one week....months is another story.
Touring battlefields months from now shouldn't be any problem. You're not planning on running through them at breakneck speed, after all.
Yeah, oddly enough my dad recently got double pneumonia around Christmas He was down hard for two weeks and he wasn't up and going for a month or two.
(I had pneumonia, my Dad had it, and my cousin had it and he had to be rushed to the hospital for IV to get more fluids. This was all within 3-4 months.)
