The idea that DPD couldn't figure out who was overheard saying that Crystal claimed 20 men raped her and had changed her story, is simply false. The can and undoubtedly did figure out who said that within 10 minutes.

The City Manager is not in the know and therefore can plausibly claim to reporters when asked that he doesn't personally know which officer it was, and that senior people in the DPD he talked to didn't tell him.

As an aside, I would bet that the Duke campus security officers don't get a lot of respect from the Durham PD and so it is not surprising that a Duke officer is trying to learn something about what happened by looking over the shoulders of or overhearing talk among the Durham police officers.

The Herald-Sun does name the officer.

Baker said he plans to report on his findings Monday night to the City Council, after he has a chance to speak to Sgt. John Shelton, the District 2 patrol supervisor whose cell phone conversation Day overheard.

Question:

Is it possible that Gottlieb investigated the AV's 1998 claim that her husband was trying to kill her?

Gottlieb, who supervises Himan and six other investigators, went from managing patrol officers to overseeing investigations in February, a month before the rape report. He has handled armed robberies, shootings, and stabbings. As a domestic violence investigator, he obtained dozens of guilty pleas from men who assaulted their wives and girlfriends.

Gottlieb's work in high-profile cases has been mostly behind the scenes, but he had a prominent role in the 2001 investigation of a street gang that targeted Hispanic immigrants for robberies and assaults. Gottlieb charged five men affiliated with the Bloods gang with nearly 200 counts of robbery, kidnapping and assault.

In the end, dozens of the victims could not be located and brought to court, causing dozens of the charges to be thrown out. Still, there was enough evidence that four of the five men pleaded guilty or were convicted of some charges. The fifth died before trial.

Gottlieb has handled at least four previous rape cases, according to police and court records. He made arrests in three cases. One man pleaded guilty to rape and received a life sentence for that and other offenses. A second man pleaded guilty to assault on a female.

Gottlieb has taken on Duke students before, as much of the off-campus population lives in the district where he serves. One loud party led to an investigation that didn't stand up in court. Five students who lived at 203 Watts St. were charged with noise and open-container violations for an October party. Gottlieb testified that by the time officers arrived, everyone had left. One student was convicted.

Clayton, who is working under Gottlieb on the case, picked up Elmostafa on Wednesday afternoon.

"The detective asked if I had anything new to say about the lacrosse case," Elmostafa said. "When I said no, they took me to the magistrate."
