Not that I favor the aphorism, "sky pilot", but I would speculate ("bet") that:

1. They are having sex.
2. They always were having sex.
3. The "sky pilot" isn't the idiot you suspect and may still be very willing to be thier pastor/minister although they may have withdrawn.

I agree with your points one and two.

I don't believe I inferred that the pastor was an "idiot". In fact, when the article stated he was their pastor at the time, I assume by these words he's not anymore.

They're probably ticked he wrote a book about them, and he's probably ticked they're still living together without the benefit of marriage (for which I admire him).
