Three years ago at the beginning of the Iraq war, the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, told a concert crowd in London, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United Sates is from Texas." That statement set off a firestorm against the Chicks. Many Americans saw the quote as unpatriotic, especially in a time of war.
Subsequently, Miss Maines apologized for the tone of her remarks, but stands by her opposition to the Bush administration. Now the Dixie Chicks have a new CD which some stations will not play the lead single from, a song that says the Chicks aren't ready to back down from anything. It's a pretty good song. There is no reason not to play it. At a Time magazine event last night, I ran into Natalie Maines, who is not exactly my No. 1 fan. She chided me for predicting on this program that the new CD she has out would sell just two million units, which is pretty good these days. We had a discussion about it a few weeks ago. She saw the show.

People in Lubbock pretty much disowned her after what she said about the president. Within days her music was banned from the radio here. People were selling "Fatalie" t-shirts at the mall within a week of her comments. Today there is still only one station that will play the Dixie Chicks.
Now she comes out with the song about Lubbock and people here are pretty pissed about it. To compare herself to Buddy Holly is blasphemous in Lubbock ....
There were a lot of letters to the editor, an entertainment columnist, etc; where it was written that the people of lubbock should forgive and forget ....but, after this last poke in eye the with "Lubbock or Leave It" she's done and even more reviled than ever
Well let's hope it was better than their last album. I believe I heard the new song on the radio the other day. A little too pop and not enough country for my taste.
-the "death" of their fame........yep, that would do it.
To tell the truth, I liked "Home" - I must've spun "Long Time Gone" (their first release from that album) a couple hundred times. But I can no longer listen to them without thinking: "Geez, they're just plain mean." So all three of their CDs are in a box in my basement, gathering dust.
Guess I'm just not 'cultured' enough to 'move on'. But I'll make a deal with all their defenders in liberal-land. I'll 'let it go' when they do the same for the president.
I just don't think that'll happen.
Okay, here's a puzzle for you.
On Billboard's website, "Not Ready To Make Nice" by the Dixie Chicks is rated #23 on the Hot 100. It is shaded in yellow, which means: "Records with the greatest airplay and sales gains this week".
I have a small problem with this.
#1. According to that one website posted on a previous Dixie Chicks thread (I have it bookmarked at work, otherwise I'd post it), this song is ranked around #153 on the Adult Contemporary playlists, down from #148. So it's being played less than last week.
#2. The new album does not come out until May 23. So there are no sales (unless they've brought back 45s and no one told me).
So how the heck are they #23 on Billboard's chart?
Bill O'Reilly will bash you up one side and down the other until you agree to be on his show.
Then you're his best friend.
I could less about their politics as I'm not going to make a decision on how I spend money based on partisanship. If I like enough off the album I'll buy it. But they haven't impressed me yet
You should try the "wreckers", also out on 5/23.
I still think you'd love to see Team America.
Hint: She doesn't survive.
Neither do Alec Baldwin, Janeane Grofolo, Sean Penn, George Clooney......
Please FReepmail me if you want on or off my FoxFan list. *Warning: This can be a high-volume ping list at times.

"Since country music's turned into this redneck theme, it's become kind of a negative thing in my mind, where I didn't think it was negative before," says fiddle player Martie Maguire. "I think for a while, a lot of artists were doing a lot of great things
that were broadening the audience so that country was cool. So it makes me sad that it's kind of reverted back to a place that I'm not that proud of and this is coming from a true country fan. I can't listen to the radio right now," Maguire tells Kroft"

This ought to endear her to country radio, fans and fellow artists.
No doubt, make them die a thousand deaths by not being popular and having their CDs in the $3.00 bargain bin.
