Tampa Devil Rays Prospect Hits Umpire With Bat

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tampa Bay prospect Delmon Young, who plays for the Triple-A Durham Bulls, was suspended for 50 games without pay by the International League on Tuesday for throwing a bat that hit a replacement umpire in the chest.

IL president Randy Mobley said he believed the suspension was the longest in the league's 123-year history.

Young was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2003 draft and was chosen the 2005 minor league player of the year by Baseball America. His brother is Detroit Tigers star Dmitri Young.

"The Tampa Bay Devil Rays fully support the decision," the team said in a statement. "As stated before, we do not tolerate this type of conduct from anyone in the Devil Rays' organization."

Why is this tolerated? This guy should never be allowed to play again, Mike Tyson should have never boxed again, Sprewell should have never played basketball again, the baseball player who spit in the umpire's face (can't remember the name)... and so on.

Do you think for one minute athletes would behave like these guys do (did) if they knew the penalty would be a lifetime ban from play?

But NO, we can't do that, too much money involved, so we have to allow these creeps to set a pathetic example for our youth.

...after which he will return to find he has earned an incredibly large strike zone.

back when I was growing up, this would never have happened..back then (mid-60's) if someone hit a home run off of Bob Gibson or Don Drysdale, the next batter up KNEW he was gonna hit the dirt on the first pitch..they'd get up, dust themselves off and play ball..today if that happens, there's words, then a fight, then suspensions..players get away with it precisely because no one will do anything about it..after all, to a player making 2 mil a year (or 20), what's 20k as a fine?

The rule should be, you start something, you sit the equivelant of 162 games..it'd be a start..

This occurred last month. How did this become new news? They ran video of this on FNC and ESPN for days last month.

Bump!!! 50 years suspension is more appropriate. Of course, he just might engage Cynthia McKinney's lawyer and tactics.

I agree with all of those points except Sprewell.

I have no love for the guy, but P.J. Carlesimo was apparently such an utter and complete pr!ck that most people in NBA circles were happy to see that someone had the b@lls to do that to him.

Robby Alomar is the one who spit on the umpire.

The suspension should have been for the entire season, but banning him forever is a bit harsh, given that the ump wasn't hurt. Had he been hurt, that might have been different.

Maybe this will be the guy's wakeup call. But if something else like this happens again, he's gone.

How about this gem? From 1965. One of the most famous fights in baseball history...

from wikipedia...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dodgers-Giants_Rivalry

Possibly the most notorious incident between these two clubs occurred August 22, 1965. In a game at Candlestick Park, Giants pitcher Juan Marichal had hit two Dodgers batters with brushback throws. When Marichal came up to bat later, Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax apparently had no interest in retaliation, but Marichal felt that Dodgers catcher Johnny Roseboro was interested, as he claimed Roseboro was returning Koufax's pitches dangerously close to Marichal's head. As Marichal and Roseboro began to argue, Marichal (#27) hit the Dodgers catcher on the head with his bat. A bench-clearing brawl ensued. Giants infielder Tito Fuentes (#26) also threatened to wield a bat, but did not use it. The fight was broken up by peacemakers Willie Mays of the Giants and Koufax of the Dodgers. Mays helped the badly bleeding (but not severely injured) Roseboro off the San Francisco field. Roseboro and Marichal eventually became close friends up until Roseboro's death in 2002.

He might as well hang them up now, because even if he does come back, he will never get a call in his favor again.

Elephants and Umpires have the longest memories of any species.

I remember seeing that on the news..it was the exception..I'm not saying there weren't fights, but today they start with very little provocation i.e. pitcher goes inside (not coming close to the batter) but the batter takes exception and it's off to the races..

my point is that today's players are spoiled and ready to fight if they feel they've been "dissed"..

This is a real good example of why I don't follow professional sports any more. Illiterate thugs with bad attitudes acting out just isn't interesting to me. And I'm certainly not willing to pay for the "privilege."

He should have been arrested and charged with assault, at a minimum.
