DURHAM, N.C. - Duke underestimated the rape allegations against members of the lacrosse team in part because Durham police initially said the accuser “kept changing her story and was not credible,” according to a university report issued Monday.

The day after the March 13 team party where a 27-year-old black woman claimed she was raped, Durham police told campus officers that “this will blow over,” the report said. It said that the woman initially told police she was raped by 20 white men, then said she was attacked by three.

I am apoplectic (something I often am LOL) that many media are burying the lead on this story. Clearly, the news is that the recollections of this AV, which swing from 20 rapists to 3 rapists and from 30 minutes to 3 minutes...well, she belongs in the category with famous nursery school AVs who said that not only did Mister Bob molest them, but he also took them up in a rocketship, etc., etc...

The N&O barely gets this 20-rapists claim into their big frontpage story before the jump. Their slant, following the Duke-commissioned PC "study," seems to be that the racist pig cops, failing to take at face value the wildly changing charges of an impaired stripper, is the story.

Suprisingly, WPTF, at noon, seemed to follow the same line (probably just reading off the AP wire). WRAL at noon did no better.

Apopletic, I am!! I think that the N&O has previously made some mistakes but, to me, this is by far the most indefensibly distorted, non-journalism that they have committed. The AV removes all doubt that her account is from another planet. And the N&O buries this nuggest. Unbelieveable.

(It is inherent in the condition of being apoplectic, that it is difficult to spell it.)

My Dukie husband and I just had the conversation about who we knew at Duke that was not just from North Carolina but from anywhere in the south. We came up with 6 names from the hundreds we knew there as undergrads. Of those 7, two were children of alumni, 1 was the child of the President of Emory, one was the child of Mary Biddle Duke Trent Semans, and two (incuding myself) were either military or corporate move arounds. The last was actually from Durham.
I almost went to Davidson which I expect is more representative of the area. My nephews and nieces from Raleigh are all at NSU. I'm disgusted with Brodhead's response and would not want my boys to go to a school where they could be thrown under the bus by the Duke admin if they bumped into someone needing "special (leftist) consideration." UVA is the same story as far as you can't get in if you are from Northern Virginia and can from the rural counties. I took classes at NSU during the summers and they were far far easier than those at Duke (which I needed them to be in Math). However, I would rather see my boys take a less academically rigorous course load then one including extreme left-wing indoctrination. Is there anywhere that is still an excellent school but doens't believe that white men are too culturally stilted to have any value?

Why does everyone keep referring to the woman accuser as a 'stripper', 'dancer', etc.

She worked for an escort agency, the women they hire and send out are hookers.

The woman is a ho. Calling her anything else is like putting lipstick on a pig.

OT:

My son will be attending Hampden-Sydney College (all male) next year. Makes the list of Top 10 Politically Incorrect Colleges

http://www.the-best-colleges.com/Ten-Best-Colleges.html

My favorite line from the catalog: "hunters may not store their firearms on campus; however a convenient locker facility is located nearby."

My favorite line from the Admissions Director's talk: "We know boys. We know that if we get an application for admission and it's in pencil, it doesn't mean that it's not a valuable applicant, it simply means he wanted to get it done and he couldn't find a pen."

Also note in the above link that Duke is listed as one of the Top 10 Politically Correct Colleges.

Printed out that list! Now I feel bad about calling it Hamster-City my whole life. I went to Christendom for a seminar (I'm a convert/cathechist) and it was too far to the right for me (which I thought, beforehand, was impossible.) It may not be for my oldest though. I'm so sorry that Duke has gone so far over the edge. It's going to take them years to recover from this and not because the boys hired an escort but because of how the university treated the students.

"Hamster-City"

Grew up in nearby Norfolk and never heard that.
I always appreciate a good pun.

HSC is conservative without being too overtly religious.

I'm reading a 900 page history of the school (there's a lot of it in 200 years) and apparently one of the problems they had with the students 200 years ago was having too much to drink, making too much noise, and peeing on the lawn. The more things change...

Have you heard anything about Christopher Newport? My husband keeps hearing nice things about it and I didn't know it existed.

I know where it is but I'm afraid I know not much more about it. I didn't know that much about HSC until my son became interested.

No. I was just putting the revision of 20 to 3 attackers into context by pointing to her initial claim of being raped for 30 minutes as also being widely considered to be impossible (and being dramatically revised downward by her apologists who are desperate to reconcile her wild account with known facts).

I remember when my son was considering schools; I bet we got $1000 worth of literature from Hampden-Sydney.

It's beautiful there.

Their approach is very personalized. They have eliminated 50% of the applicant pool by being all male and then about 80% of the remaining applicant pool of men who won't consider an all male school. So they try harder.

Motto: "HSC - where men are men and women are guests"

My older brother went to Washington and Lee which used to be a mirror image of HSC. He didn't lack for a college social life. But then they screwed it all up by admitting women.
