I was watching the baby eagle a few hours ago, when it was alone in the nest...it was flapping its wings...that is the first time I have seen it do that...I suppose he is experimenting...he kept getting closer and closer to the edge of the nest, while flapping his wings...In time, he will take his first flite...scarey, but a necessary part of growing up...

I've noticed that too, he spends more time flapping and stretching. When mama leaves, sometimes he works his way over to the edge and appears to be looking over the side, as if to say, 'yep, there's only one way outta here - it's fly or die!'
...yes I'm anthropomorphizing (?), but it's sure fun to watch him!

Two days ago I was watching some baby birds chirping away in the nest over my front door, when one of them suddenly got very excited, stood up and started vigorously flapping his short little wings, then lifted off like Woodstock taking off from Snoopy's doghouse. The other four in the nest got very quiet and looked at each other. Next day there were only two left, and by that afternoon the nest was empty.
I wish I could be there when this 'little' guy takes off for the first time...

He's been doing a lot of that. Makes me think you're right about it being very soon. It's completely dark here now, but it sure looks like plenty of daylight left where he is. I just hope he doesn't decide to do it now (10:00 pm MDT) because I'm off to bed!

I saw one of the parents drop in several time Saturday, but it was weird with the camera refreshing at 10 seconds, it was baby bird alone -poof- parent sitting on the nest -poof- baby bird alone. Barely caught by the camera at all.
