HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. -- Police officers on Long Island fired nine bullets at a pit bull on Thursday after the dog attacked a woman.

Suffolk County Police said officers were called to the home of Melanie Auletta, of Huntington Station, shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday. She was trapped in her home by her neighbor's pit bull, which wouldn't leave her yard.

Auletta had been attacked previously by the dog, and eight complaints have been filed with police about the dog this year. The dog's owner wasn't home.

Police Officer Timothy Tonkin attempted to lasso the dog using an animal control device, but couldn't secure the dog due to its aggressiveness

The dog began to attack another woman who was walking by. Officer Tonkin and two other officers diverted the dog's attention from the woman, who wasn't injured.

The pit bull turned on the officers and attacked Tonkin, who fired one round from his service weapon at the dog, striking him in the chest. The dog attacked a second officer, who also fired one round, striking the dog in the side.

The animal continued to chase the officers, and they fired nine shots, hitting the dog four times. The officers were able to lasso the wounded dog and turned him over to the Huntington town dog warden. The dog was in stable condition at a local veterinarian's office.

There is a Blue Heeler down the road from me and this dog is the coolest dog I have ever seen. She owns the neighborhood and is loved by everyone. She is very smart too. LoL, but we have an evil Cocker Spaniel down the road that would eat you alive is he could break loose from his chain,,,,lol, weird....

Any suggestions on how to explain that me, my son and our small, yippy dog will not be living with a four-legged demon dog?

Yes, say "Hey Dodo brain! Me, my son and our small, yippy dog will not be living with a four-legged demon dog!"

Then marry someone else...

A shelty mix is great, but a real blue heeler will take out a cougar, and walk away. Seen it happen - the cat was very big, and very dead when it was over.

Yes,

I do not mean to disparage range practice. Quite the opposite in fact. However every time a story on FR involves rounds missing targets or misplaced rounds these heroes disparage the shooter. Forgetting that it is one thing to shoot on a range and another to shoot under stress. BUT, there are ranges that can help you with that. But usually not your neighborhood gun club.

There is no breed of dog out there that is evil. Many pits are bred with hate. The result is the same as in a human, sort of like a time bomb.

Can someone tell me how to post a pic?

My fiancee wants to get either a rottie or a pit, from a pound no less! Any suggestions on how to explain that me, my son and our small, yippy dog will not be living with a four-legged demon dog?

Dump your fiancee NOW. Forget explanations. If he/she needs an explanation, he/she's too dumb to understand it anyway. Count yourself darned lucky to have had this gargantuan red flag waved before you married him/her. Trust me -- you just got a hint of his/her screwed priorities and disconnect with reality. The business of getting a lethal power dog from a pound is a mere scratch on the surface of serious "issues" beneath. Thank your lucky stars and run, don't walk, and don't look back. Repeat: Dump your fiancee NOW and forget explanations.
