HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. -- Police officers on Long Island fired nine bullets at a pit bull on Thursday after the dog attacked a woman.
Suffolk County Police said officers were called to the home of Melanie Auletta, of Huntington Station, shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday. She was trapped in her home by her neighbor's pit bull, which wouldn't leave her yard.
Auletta had been attacked previously by the dog, and eight complaints have been filed with police about the dog this year. The dog's owner wasn't home.
Police Officer Timothy Tonkin attempted to lasso the dog using an animal control device, but couldn't secure the dog due to its aggressiveness
The dog began to attack another woman who was walking by. Officer Tonkin and two other officers diverted the dog's attention from the woman, who wasn't injured.
The pit bull turned on the officers and attacked Tonkin, who fired one round from his service weapon at the dog, striking him in the chest. The dog attacked a second officer, who also fired one round, striking the dog in the side.
The animal continued to chase the officers, and they fired nine shots, hitting the dog four times. The officers were able to lasso the wounded dog and turned him over to the Huntington town dog warden. The dog was in stable condition at a local veterinarian's office.
Lemme guess ...
"Peaches" was always well-behaved and great with children before this incident.
A hand grenade will only go off if you pull the pin.
The same cannot be said of one of those pit-bull monsters.
Well, after this, whatever they were calling him before, they ought to change it to "Mongo".
Why is it at the vets it is going to be put down any way.
What a waste of money treating it for gun shot wounds.
LOL. Anything you say, Wyatt.
one of our infantry companies was attached to secure a REMF unit during the initial invasion of iraq (this time around, not in '91). those REMF guys acted like fish out of water when they held their weapons. once, all the stray dogs were becoming an extreme menace around the camp and the CSM ordered the infantry 1SG to start shooting the dogs. the 1SG i believe told him something less than satisfactory so the CSM said he would do it himself. he walked outside and approached the first dog he came to and took out his 9mm. he emptied his 9mm at the dog, who was about 20 feet away. not only did every bullet miss, but the dog didn't even seem bothered by the gunfire. he lived to scrounge another day.
Hmmm...I guess I will have to rethink my 12 gauge rifled slug strategy against the neighborhood 400 lb black bears. Do they sell bazookas at Wal-Mart?
They often display the attack trait without mental restraint of every other breed that I know of. I am sure that trait can be used for good, but IMHO they should only be used as domestic pets or residential guards with the most strict control and owners fully liable.
Wait till 20 million Mexicans and OTMs get settled in and start their
Pit Bull breeding programs....
We need more laws STAT!
Four footed law suits waiting to happen.
I have a hard time seeing why an animal with these characteristics is necessary. I have some neighbors who're on their second Doberman that's been very well trained to walk around the perimeter of their property and warn unwanted visitors away without menacing mere passers by. Most large, generally friendly dogs like Labs are still very protective of their families and will attack people who genuinely menace family members. Hence, I don't see any good reason to own an animal that's a four footed law suit waiting to happen.
Perhaps they need to spend a little more time at the practice range? Good thing this was not an armed criminal...
Good question. Why would someone own a breed developed to fight and kill? Any redeeming features the breed has are merely accidental.

First shot in the 9MM vs. 45 Auto war that will inevitably develop on this thread. Let me just be the first to say that whichever caliber you prefer, you're right. :-)
Sounds like the officers need more range time...
hehe.. I got so tired of that war that I just keep one of each!
