The Myakka "Skunk Ape" Photographs
By Loren Coleman
Two remarkable new photographs of what may be a Florida Skunk Ape have been discovered through an interesting chain of events by Sarasota resident and animal welfare specialist David Barkasy. Bigfoot! The True Story of Apes in America overviews how these photographs were taken, how this find surfaced, the first reactions and analyses, and some tentative conclusions. For the time being, certain supportive notes will remain, here, available and online
Here is the December 22, 2000, letter signed "God Bless. I prefer to remain anonymous" mailed to the Sarasota Sheriff's Department.
Newspapers in Florida, the Art Bell show, and other radio programs during mid-February, decided to talk about the Myakka photographs. The hope is that the woman photographer will be identified.
In the meantime, meaningful analyses of the eyeshine, the pupil diameter, the dentition, the tongue, hair color, and exhibited behavior of this apparent primate is taking place.
These Coleman enlargements and details were created from the first generation color prints scanned by David Barkasy of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Department's originals. These prints show forehead lines, yellow canines, fingernails, hair, and other significant details. Copyright 2001 by David Barkasy and Loren Coleman![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Below: Concurrent with my thinking, Tony Scheuhamme, a biologist with the Canadian Wildlife Service, pointed out some features on a good photograph of an orangutan by Denise McQuillen. This is not to say the Myakka photographs are of an orangutan, but it certainly assists in identifying features that are found on a known anthropoid that appear to exist on this one too.

Could this be a "Skunk Ape." an as yet-undiscovered large anthropoid, per the "Unknown Pongid" type discussed in The Field Guide to Bigfoot, Yeti, and Other Mystery Primates Worldwide (NY: Avon, 1999)?

The Myakka Ape Photographs are only the most recent of a long history of Skunk Ape and related mystery anthropoid reports. I have files, and letters from people that lived along the east-central coast of Florida (mostly in the Holopaw-Brooksville area) who related to me their series of encounters with apelike animals, especially during the 1963-1968 period. We should not be surprised that the Everglades may not be the key to solving this mystery, but the Myakka area may.

It's Chewbacca!
It would be the Common or Blurry Sasquatch.
SJackson, thank you for all that info on the Skunk Ape. The Myakka photos seem to me personally be the most convincing Bigfoot photos out there.
In the South, Bigfoot is referred to as the Skunk Ape for his terrible smell, and also the Swamp Ape because of the tendency of sightings to take place in swampy wildernesses or wetlands areas. When I was in college my buddies and I loved to go out to swamp areas and do some Bigfoot searching; we never found one, of course, but we did have a lot of fun.
Now here's my analysis of the picture in question here.
I'm not necessarily convinced that it's real, but I'm not going to dismiss it too quickly.
It's too blurry to tell what exactly is in the picture. But a few noticable details can be seen. The first and most obvious is the unnaturally long, shaggy hair. This is why I think you can rule out other animals such as deer or bears. Reading other comments, some people say that the hair seems long but too finely groomed. However, I think that because the creature is so close to the camera, it's too blurred to see finer details and only the basic hair pattern can be seen.
What's also worth noting is that the creature, whatever it is, seems to be standing upright. This is why I would rule out other creatures. Now, if it were a bear, it could be standing up against the tree the camera's on. However, if that were the case, it wouldn't be as thin. We would really see more of the creature, and more visible features such as the legs would be seen. Just looking at it, as well as the hair pattern indication, it really looks like this creature is walking upright, toward the right. I have trouble imagining whatever it is to be facing the camera or facing away from it.
Based on what I've heard about Sasquatch, I don't think those creatures would let anyone get that close.
If you take this photo and lighten it up a bit, you'll see that it's the south end of a north-bound horse. The hair is the horse's tail, and you can see its right hip, the underside of it's right jaw, and the right side of its neck. It's pretty clear.
Looks like Cousin It.
Someone found where Janet Reno has been hiding again.
it's clearly a guy in a monkey suit.
uuuhhhh ... actually...
I on the fence - someone come and help me down... preferably on the side of truth.
