Word For The Day, Monday, 5/1/06

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

ingrate; noun

n : a person who shows no gratitude [syn: thankless wretch, ungrateful person]

Etymology: [From Middle English ingrat, ungrateful, from Old French, from Latin ingrtus : in-, not; see in-1 + grtus, pleasing, thankful; see gwer-2 in Indo-European Roots.]

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!

Here is my example with WFTD.

While the ingrates march, i hope the rest of yunz are spending money like a hunky going to the old country, as my dearly departed dad would say. And since it is appropos of the topic, let me explain the derivation of that particular phrase. Back in the olden days, when all four of my GRANDPARENTS LEGALLY came to the US via boat from Eastern Europe (aka the OLD COUNTRY) what they would do is work at any menial job they could find, save up their money and sometimes they would return home to visit the family left there. And before they would return for that visit, they would spend a bunch of $$$ on stuff to take back as gifts, they would SPEND MONEY LIKE A HUNKY GOING TO THE OLD COUNTRY (or like a drunken sailor). That is your a$$igment for today.

Ingratitude is a sad thing,
Particularly this lovely spring,
Shopping calls me, earrings and threads.
Igrates can stand upon their heads.

A+ they intend to harm the country that they want to live in, by stamping their feet in a childish fit of pique, saying DON'T DISS US, we are IMPORTANT. IMO they need spanked. and then deported.

Boy, that AlGore (what hump?) is such an ingrate - having an extra month in Dick Cheney's house...

The brain train was late,
When it reached that ingrate,
That earth-toney bore,
By the name of Al Gore,
Who buys calendars just for a date.

Unlike the ingrates and the political opportunists supporting them and in honor of my grandparents who immigrated legally many years ago and busted their butts to make a better life AS AMERICANS, I'll be putting a full day of work in today...

A+ mik, i am totally with you. Both of my grandmothers came to this country from Eastern Europe LEGALLY and cleaned houses for a living, and each generation has been better educated and better off since. i am all for bettering yourself LEGALLY. and oh, by the way. NEITHER Of my parents grew up speaking either Ukrainian or Lithuanian in their homes. my parents did not speak their parents language EVER. they assimilated.

the Dunkin Donuts was extremely empty this AM, btw. But there were the same two immigrants behind the counter serving customers as usual. i asked my Panamanian ladyfriend, in spanish, if there was less people today. she said, yes, bc of what is happening and she pointed towards DC. i said, i don't like that. she said, i don't either.

I'm shopping at the local bakery this morning, staffed by native Americans and not Central American ingrates. The plan here is to avoid any businesses that close today and not go to them again.
